Will this engine work?

Hi all,
I am only 17 years old and this is the only engine I can get my hands on for free.



It is an old clinton engine. It is a four stroke an dlater on I will measure the cylinder and work out how many cc it is.

It is currently being used as a stationary engine and I dont want to modify the engine in anyway except remove the govener to get a few more rpm.

Does anyone know if this engine is suitable for a go kart and I think it could be 5hp (does this sound right) and if it is suitable how much rpm will I be able to get out of it SAFELY.

So I just want to know what RPM I will get and if it look suitable for a go kart?

Make sure the shaft is usable (Looks fine, find out diameter with caliper).

Looks like a standard 4 stroke. Probably 3600RPM.

The shaft is a 3/4 inch with key slot!

Do you think i will get more than 3600 rpm without govener?

you'll prolly hit 4500 rpm's but on this engine you need to talk to Mr. Russ
he realy likes these engines

I don't quite think that the engine in question would be 5HP, maybe a 3. Seems a little too small to be 5HP. I could be wrong.

I dunno, Russ seems to be the authority on Clintons around here, (one of the oldest too) LOL.

Between 2.5 and 3.5 hp is best guess.
I only work with the 2 cycles as the 4 cycles are just too darn heavy and under powered for their size.
I can get detailed info on this engine , but I need numbers off of name plate. If name plate is unavailable, then supply me with bore and stroke.
Might be better off unloading it on Ebay and using that money to get something a little more up to date.
Very hard to get parts for these engines.
Took me over 2 years to find parts for my Panther. Original carb still eludes me.

Where will the name plate be?

I have another clinton engine that is alot smaller than this one and it has a sticker on it stating that it is 3hp so I have reason to believe this is more than 3hp?

The shaft on my larger clinton engine is 3/4" keyed shaft.
What sort of spped do you think I will get out of a go kart powered by the larger one of clinton engine?

The stroke length is around 43mm and the diameter is around 60mm (sorry for the metric)

If this help then great but could you let me know if this engine will be suitable for a light go kart!!!

2⅜ (43mm) bore number appears correct. Common number for small block Clinton and covers many possible engine configurations.
Stroke number needs to be more accurate as this would be the true identifier of engine type and therefore hp.
Unless you can come up with a more accurate stroke number, I would say engine appears to be 2.75 hp.
What tool(s) are you using for measurements?

What sort of spped do you think I will get out of a go kart powered by the larger one of clinton engine?

Depends on tire/sprocket sizes. Under 30 mph (48 kph) maximum on average.
