sorry to boycott this conversation but im also having some problems with mine.
after sitting for about two months with bad gas in it it wouldnt start nd then i cleaned the carb nd put fresh gas in it nd it started, but it wouldnt keep at idlefor more than a few seconds and it sounds like its knocking tbh so i think its running lean, also plug looks lean tbh.
but thats not even my problem, my problem is that once it gets up to temp it dies even with me holding the throttle and whn i give it gas it just bogs and dies. it is also smoking white out the exhaust a lot, nd on top of that theres smoke coming out of somewhere i think cuz when i give it gas there is white smoke coming out of the engine, i think it could be the breather hose but i dont see why it would be burning oil
So im confused if its lean or rich, why the smoke, any ideas?
i tried internet and chatgpt to no avail

You have a Tecumseh 10 horse like the OP? If so, did you read this entire thread?
Show us some photos of the engine by all means. Wouldn't hurt.

White smoke means oil.
Could be stuck rings.
You said it sat for awhile
and what would the fix look like? is there a way to fix it without tearing down the engine?
also its an ironton 208cc, externally its a lot like the predator 212, reading specs and from looking inside the chamber ive seen it has flat top piton, higher compression, i think it revs higher too cuz it makes more torque than the predator at higher rpm, also prob more hp idk exactly but its faster than most stock predators ive read about.
mine doesnt have the air filter cover, exposed filter (yes i kw im gonna fix that)

I would just put fresh gas some Sea-Foam and a touch of Marvel Mystery Oil in the fuel tank and fresh oil in it and run the snot out of it for a week or 2 then see how it behaves or misbehaves. Make sure you run it hard and get it good and hot a few times.

Wow, an Ironton engine, the Northern Tool house brand. I looked recently and they don't sell this in their stores anymore but a fancy "NorthStar" line of engines has seemingly taken its place. That is just trivia, I did not mean to say there's a reason why they are not sold anymore... 🤫

....on top of that theres smoke coming out of somewhere i think cuz when i give it gas there is white smoke coming out of the engine

You need to pinpoint that smoke leak [which may be nearly impossible to do so because of the forced air from the blower] because it sounds like a possible blown head gasket... *which is very common on these small engines*.

I am also inclined to believe it could be stuck rings. Both of these can happen to the best of engines in any condition. Otherwise we are in disbelief because we assume "this engine is too new for that to have happened" etc.

I wanted a photo of YOUR engine but the stock photo is better than nothing I guess--at least it gets people thinking about OHV engines and what could be the issue.
