Which motor and controller for my e-gokart

Hi,
I have bought a used gocart to convert to a e-kart for my kids.
I already have a good litium battery (50v) and about 19ah.

I would like a DC motor with 1500-1800 to get some Power.
Are some of this good alternatives or does anyone of you know Another good setup for my Project?

also.. would be great if there is a way to make the motor run backwards for reverse.

1000w and 1800w

I correctly have the 1800w version and can't figure out how to wire it. There is no one currently that can explain it for me either. I'm building a kart to race at the New York world makers faire power racing series in September.

The 1800w version if I'm not mistaken has a built in reverse .. one of the connectors is labeled inverted gear. But I've yet to have anyone confirm connection.

as per the sellers description... the 1800W is pointless!
it might be a 1800W motor (I start to doubt that) but the controller is limited to 1536 Watts
and that limit means "available for seconds until it burns", sooo say 1000 Watts permanetly.

And that's what the zy1020 from your first link can do as well..
(if it is zy1020 48V 1000W originally labeled motor)
the unite series is properly labelled when they leave the factory.
(EV rating.. permanently available mechanical motor power! NOT max available electrical power draw from the batteries)

Ask the seller for the manufacturers spec sheets of the motor they're selling if you do not know the motor,
or at least a power diagram of the motor.
if they cannot provide you with one, it's a risk I would not be willing to take personally,
so be aware you might buy around half the power you're aiming for.

here's a power diagram for a 1000W 48V my1020 (same thing as the zy1020 IIRC)

as you can see it happily draws 1600W max from the batteries, and provides up to 1200W mechanical

And if the yiyun controller is the one taylored for the 1000W motor
it also happily provides the 35Amp it needs (should peak at 40 AFAIR)

Anyways, again the numbers in the product description apear to be WRONG for the motor,
or worse, they're correct in which case this is maybe a smaller version of the motor (1020s are available in 500, 650, 750, 800 and 1000 in either 36V or 48V ..[all mechanical output power] ) that's been relabelled.

frankly IDK why the imp&exp company put a label on the motor instead of the motor company.
and that rating even if a permanent rating makes it a 1000W electrical motor (so it'll be the 800W version)
still claiming 1000W output (from 998W input that's hard to believe)

and the second is even worse :(

spec sheets.. diagrams
for sure not without proper documentation.

Sid being the electrical guru I praise your knowledge.

Only reason I got this motor was some people ran it last year at the same race and were faster and had longer run times. But asking a competitor hasn't yielded any luck on the wiring of my controller .

The motors are boma (copies) and from the looks of everything inside I personally can't tell a difference on this "1800" watt motor.

or better: are you sure you have the same controller?

if so, he listed all conenctions in his product description, so wiring shouldn't be a problem

allow me to quote:
Battery :Thick Black (Power Negative) /Thick Red (Power Positive)
Motor :Thick Yellow (Motor Negative) /Thick Blue (Motor Positive)
Ignition Switch :Thin Red(VCC)/Thin Blue
Indicator : Thin red (Indicator power output) /thin black (indicator negative)
Brake :thin yellow (Brake signal)/thin black(Negative Power)
Speed governor :Thin blue(Speed handlebar Signal input) /Thin black (Negtive Power) /thin red(5V Positive Power)
Charge Port : Thin red (charge input power Positive) /thin black (Power negative)
Brake Light: Thin red (power Positive) /thin black (Power negative)
the charging connector usually easy to tell apart (differently colored, opposite gender, different style...) in the listing above it's red for example.

Anyways, if you want to we can look into that,
just start a thread and post some pics of your controller and conenctors etc.
and we'll see what goes where.
(it's not too difficult tbh... we'll sort it out)

I recently mounted the Boma (listed as 1,800 watt) brushless motor
on El Dingo (now El Dingo II)

I also had trouble with the wiring "interface diagram" as they call it

...& they totally leave out the forward/reverse switch

...which is actually labeled as "inverted gear"


I drew up a wiring diagram to help simplify things :thumbsup:


I have to 100% agree with sid :cheers2:

Mathematically, (by their numbers) it should be ~2.5 HP

...but, I don't think so :ack2:

I have done a few test runs with this motor, so far

& this motor does not seem as powerful as they claim

* Top speed with this motor on El Dingo so far, has been ~20 mph

* I can get 15 mph out of the 450 watt (a less than 1 HP) brushed motor on the El Turbo kart

IT looks like the kit with 1000w would be the best alt. (Just have to verify it really is 1000w). It's also brushed which seems easier to make reverse.
My battery is 50v. Is it best combined with 48v instead if 36v.?

in fact a brushless is easier to reverse, since all you have to do is reverse phase order (which can be done with just the controller and 'code')

to reverse a brushed motor you need to swap polarity (physically)
say a dual H bridge a set of reversing solenoids etc...

the 50V battery should power the 48V setup just nicely...

less than 5% overvoltage shouldn't be any problem at all.

keep in mind that those controllers have an undervoltage protection;
so you might not be able to use the full capacity potential of your batpack.

OP asked about "good alternatives" for motor controller packages.

Are there any, "good alternatives" that you know of, or would give a try, or recommend?

...larger: 1,500W to 2,000W (like ~2HP to 2 1/2 HP)

...affordable: like under $500.00 (& that's 5 times the cost of a 6.5 HP predator)

I know he did.. well a trustworthy seller and a real deal unite motor (1020 series 48V 1000W)
is IMHO the best 1000W brushed motor you can get (cheap, reliable, powerfull...)

the 1800W.. IDK from on top of my head, and frankly I am not exactly keen to do some searching.
that's why I haven't answered that part ;)

And no nononononoooo.. do NOT start with hp values, that's making things sooo much worse!
electric motors should be rated in watts and in watts alone!
(ideally for us in perm. mechanical power out watts)

your hp is different than mine even in gas engines, gas engine hp is different from electric motor hp, and frankly that's all a huge mess! Watts is sooo much more consistent.
