By default I have wound up with two B&S 5hp engines. Certain parts are getting difficult to find. What engine is the most serviceable these days?

You mean which of the two or which engine in general?
That trophy belongs to anything modern but I’d vote for The Predator 212cc.
Sorry, I was unclear. The two that I have are basically identical. Looking for a different model for which parts are readily available.

The two that I have are basically identical.

Show ‘em. The basic horizontal shaft Briggs 130000 series is still out there on many a snow blower, garden tiller, pump and what-not. These engines will essentially never wear out in the occasional-use platforms they inhabit. A garden tiller that only gets used for an hour of tilling each season (if even that) will just keep on keeping on. So there should be plentiful parts available used and new. I will admit the metal fuel tanks are hard to find used, and new or NOS ones are outrageous.

Sparkwizard is right about “Raptor”. I think there is some racing still going on with these engines even though the Raptor has been almost completely supplanted and eclipsed by the Animal. Again, parts should still be plentiful.

I think collecting a dozen of these engines to use as donor engines, as well as for primary use is a good idea at this point. I think the crankshafts are no longer available anywhere.

If I were going to focus on a certain type, I’d seek out the Industrial Commercial “I/C” versions which typically had a full or partial (depending on specs) ball bearing crank and a steel cylinder liner. The whole shebang a step above the old Kool Bore engines with plain bearings on the crank…
