Where to find a 2 stroke engine for buggy build?

Hey guys, I am doing an offroad buggy build and I am just wondering where to find a 2 stroke engine for my buggy? I would like something under 600cc and would prefer at least 250cc. I would also prefer it to have an attached gearbox (I am sick of trying to tune CVTs).

I have searched craigslist and ebay but cannot seem to find just a 2 stroke engine without having to buy an entire bike.

Well the best 2 strokes I know of are snowmobile engines, but those are CVT driven machines. They do require at least 8:1 gearing with 20-22 inch tires. You can usually pick up a sled for $350 to $2000. The Fuji 488 fan cooled engine from a 1980s Polaris Indy 500 is an excellent engine. Specs are 50hp and it's a very reliable engine. Tuning and syncing the dual Mikuni carburetors takes a bit of work. You'll need to rejet for summer temps, I do have a chart to show jetting. Belts for the CVT are still easy to find. Also the engine is cheap to rebuild (most 2 strokes are).

Just know, for best performance from a 2 stroke engine, you'll need the expansion pipe (tuner pipe). When we had our sled, it only ran well with Polaris brand 2 stroke oil, the engine is an oil injected engine and not mixed. You'll need to block off the oil injector if you plan on running mixed gas.

Cheapest and easiest to get with a transmission would be a Honda CR250 out of a dirt bike.

We have no idea where in the world you are, so it would help to at least fill out your location with a country + state/province/etc.

Here in CA there are always engines in the classifieds, so you must not be a local.

I have a complete '72 Yamaha DT2 (250cc) five speed engine I'm currently trying to get rid of. It's going to get used for parts if no wants it.

This is in the Detroit area. Sled possibly with a spare engine with exhaust. Yeah not seeing any 2 stroke bikes. A few newer CRF250 4 strokes.
