Hey, I was wondering where do you guys buy your keyed jackshafts, sprockets belts, chains etc.

I want to build a go gart but I have no clue where to start buying and what dimensions of any sort. I want to use a torque converter and ive been looking at these. (not for prices, just for actual products to get info about them)

But I don't know what the numbers mean!

- Whats Bore size?
- Teeth (What teeth? and for what?)
- Chain # (Any weblinks to good readings to fill me up on chains? Because I have no idea what the numbers mean)

And I'm just general confused on how there set up. You put a jackshaft on the driven side with a sprocket to a chain to a sprocket on the rear axle?

*EDIT* And I have a 5HP Tecumseh lawn mower engine if anyone has any suggestions for a torque converter.

There are many stores much cheeper than gokartsusa... In fact, I think there is even a freaking thread for online stores! Go check that out......

Jason, you're right, most prices are fairly standard. Sites that specialize in lawn mower repair tend to be higher on kart parts, gokartsusa for some reason seems high on nearly everything, some sites have better shipping prices than others. I would assume a warehouse business similar to BMI would have great prices but get you on shipping and vise versa.

Yep that is true sucks that my local shop is a joke he tryed to sell me a 600 doller torque converter when i called to see if he had any i just laught and hung up on him...

Not to like be a buzzkill but you guys just hijacked my thread and talked about nothing I had questioned about and talked about the one thing I wasn't asking any specifications for, prices.

Also I forgot to mention, but i live in Canada, so if you do have a cool place for us Canadians please let me know.

Well If You Live In or Around Spokane The Best Place For Kart Parts Is Browns Bearings,They Have Everything For A Go Kart And There Really Cheap!

We buy our sprocket/keyed jackshafts from Azusa my friend. For a comet torque converter, with the introduction of Chinese clutches on the market such as any being offered by GTC or BMI or whomever they're all Chinese no matter what people say. Look on ebay for a cheap used Comet, I've seen them sell for 100 dollars in the past month, interest seems to be dropping.

Bore size- when speaking of bore size, that is the actual size of the internal measurement of the sprocket/clutches which tells us what they might fit on, 5/8", 3/4", 1" etc.

Chain sizes - there are 4 common sizes of kart chain on the market, #35, 41, 40, 420. #35 is 3/8" pitch and the most common of these because it was prevalent up until the late 80's. The other 3 sizes are 1/2" pitch, which all end up being stronger. Think of chain as being 1-8, 8 = 1" pitch which makes 4* chains 1/2" pitch, knowing that we can see that 3* chains are 3/8" pitch. Pitch is the distance from top of the roller or tooth to top of the roller or tooth.

Finally, is your engine vertical shaft? If so, I'd not suggest using it on a kart.

Thanks alot for the info. And yes my engine is vertical shaft but two stroke and someone in another one of my threads said he should be fine then and also she runs fine without the blade to.
