Here in Australia you can get cheap motorbikes at insurance auctions. If I were you I'd ring up some insurance companies and ask where they sell/what they do with their written off motorbikes.

After selling all the parts you don't need I'd be surprised if you don't get ALL your money back, while keeping the engine and brakes. Bike engines are by far the cheapest engines you can get IMO, as well as being the best.

Yeah, motorcycle engines are pretty cheap, comparatively speaking. You could get a 650cc motorcycle engine for less than you would pay for a new gx390 clone. It might even come with the transmission depending on what model it is.

99% of motorbike engines have the gearbox and clutch built into the motor. They share the same block.

That salvagebikesauction website looks like the place to go.

OK, my experience with motorcycle engines is limited to 3 engines, only 1 has transmission built in, the other two were seperate units.

Pit bike engines can be picked up 2nd hand for about 80 bucks or less. I saw 3 pit bike engines for sale for 120 bucks the other week. So tempted to buy them but i had not use for them. i wouldnt get a 250cc engine unless its a buggy. Its just too big for a kart unless its a proper racing kart. I would get a pit bike engine. Tuns of grunt and fairly easy electrical wise. For the price you pay for a honda clone you can buy a pit bike engine that has about 6 times the power for less. With the extra money you can buy the needed sprockets, jackshaft setup and chain and still be out in front.

Craigslist has been good to me. Older street cruisers are normally pretty cheap. Last year i picked up a 78' kawasaki kz400 for $40, only 9k miles on it, sat for 10+ years and just needed a coil.

CL has been the hotspot for me.. The past two weeks i have found an 02 CBR600RR motor, Tranny, And harness for $250,

Then 2 01 Kawi zx6 motors, 1 harness, 1 airbox, and 1 fuel pump for $150 flat.

Always seem to find the good deals when i have no money / no need.

Would a Pitbike engine make a cart scream?

Here in California there is "Cycle Salvage".
Just as the name implies, its a business that is in the business of salvaging motorcycles and only motorcycle parts.
