So i got this kart. A small lawn kart. Predator 212cc engine. My wheels are bolted on with nuts that have a plastic looking ring in the top and normal washer. The problem is that when i tighten the lugs all the way the wheels wont move. When i loosen them up a half turn or so and then drive the wheels lock up. If i loosen them more and then drive the wheels fall off. My dad thinks that lock washers will solve my problem. Wjat do u guys think? I would rather only make one trip to the hardware store.

The nuts you speak of are called nyloc self locking nuts ..... I want to see a pic of your wheel hub, with out a bearing in one side.... Something don't sound right......

Yeah....sounds like there's no spacer....the washer is too big...and the nyloc is worn out....

You could just replace the nylocs and back them off a hair from locking up and run it that way...but there's some other stuff that would make it better...but we need the requested pics...

You can look for a shorter nyloc nut or do a regular nut with a cotterpin through the axle keeping it on. Or someone else may suggest something.

You got options....
First, you need to add an inner spacer between the inner races. If not, when you snug up the but, you put the bearings in a bind. This is a must do.....
Once you do that...
The easiest thing you can do is remove the wheel, and thread the lock but on. You want to turn it back and forth a bit to "cut" threads in the plastic , so that you can thread it on plastic side first. You have to have at least 3-4 threads of metal. Try removing one of the inner washers beingused as a spacer.
You could cut off the bolt and weld on a longer one. Cheap and easy....
You could buy new wheels.... :censored: I'd try the first 2......

Guys....guys....guys....really? ...

Simple.....get a lock nut that has dimples in the sides....(these only take 1/2 the nut to work....

What Jim is saying is you should have a spacer inside the hub that only contacts the inner races of the bearings to eliminate side loading on the bearings....definitely a good idea.....

But you can run without them...expect shorter bearing life tho....

i had the same problem. found a mom and pop hardware store that had the proper sized nyloc nut BUT less than half the thickness of the original nut that didn't fit.

Jim: That is the best simplest idea I have heard in a loooong time. Just put the nyloc on backwards. I have about 8 places I can do that to. Thanks for a great tip.
Poboy you mean this is a lock nut?: I did not know that.

Yep....look at the threads on the other side from the dimple.....see how they are deformed? I think they work better than nylocs....especially on their initial install.....

However....I have turned nylocs around before....one thing I don't like about it is that the contact surface area is now smaller as the ends of most nylocs are round....
