No matter what type of brakes, trying to stop a fast kart with only 1 wheel is riddled with drawbacks. On the cheap, meyby you could rig up some sort of secondary band brake system on the other rear wheel and then tie they're linkages in together.

COST.

The idea was to get a couple carts together as cheap as possible.
I could do live axle, then I would need

2 pillow blocks
1 disc brake
1 caliper
1 master cylinder
2 live axle hubs
1 live axle

and a sprocket hub..

not that much money but still... I know we will end up with live axles soon

since you want cheap brakes, maybe you could rig up scrub brakes for both rear tires.

How 'bout a masonry block, and 20 feet of chain?!?!
Kidding. Actually, a second band brake on the other wheel's not a bad idea, it'll effectively double the braking power you have now. It will still cost you a few dollars, but may be the cheapest option you've got.
AND- then when you get into the loose stuff, you can hammer on the clamps and git all sideways 'n' stuff, without even having a live axle!!! ;)
Cheers!

I could do live axle, then I would need

2 pillow blocks -$18
1 disc brake -$22 (including brake hub)
1 caliper -$ 40 (includes master "for dirt bike")
2 live axle hubs-$32
1 live axle-$free(guy at work gave it to me)

and a sprocket hub..-$35

Things you still need--
Shaft collars- $24
New sprocket-$12
New Chain-$15
Maybe new tires with different wheels-$35-50
