What would be a good sized ATV for a 15 year old

Okay, fair enough. But I do have some background knowledge of them. Like 4 of my buddies have them and every last one of them sucks really bad in our dunes. A big factor in this is probably that they're all darn near stock, except for exhausts, but still, I was NOT impressed with any of them.

One question about a Blaster: Will it accomodate someone of my stature(6ft and growing?) I have heard they are small, thats why I ask.

Secondly, are nerf bars nessacary for trail riding? I would perfer not to break my legs, as well as perfer not to spend $300 on something that will just break in those conditions.

Are these things high maintainance? I hear that two strokes often require premixed gas/oil... but is this done in two seperate tanks, or do I have to get out a screw driver and stir it myself...?

Are 2 strokes capable of operation in New England? I might want to use it during the Winter, to go riding. Obviously if there isnt a ft of snow on the ground....


About insuring one of these puppies, does anyone do it? I mean its expensive to fix I imagine, should you rip off an A arm on a rock.. But are the premiums expensive as well? I could stomach maybe a hundred or two a year, but not a grand or two a year in insurance....


Would you say that its a deal to get a Blaster (Mostly early 2000's it seems) for about $1000? Or are these ones that you really have to try to get to lower their price?

You should be fine my bro is 6'3'' and rode one for a while... kinda looked goofy but he rode it fine

Nerf bars are nice you can find them on ebay for way les i wouldnt spend 300 on them... and my bud had one on his YFZ 450 rolled it and nailed his nerf bar and just dented it on the end

EVERY TIME YOU FILL IT WITH GASOLINE THERE IS A SPECIAL MIX OF 2 STROKE OIL YOU MIX WITH THE GASOLINE... when u go buy premix oil the bottle should have a chart with how much of it will go into one gallon of gas and getting what ratio of oil to gass

Yes they are fine... Its not like the motors gona say **** its ****ING COLD HERE IM NOT GONA RUN lol

On a side note when theres a foot of snow on the ground thats when they are fun as hell!

If you rip your arm off on a rock... then thats different then having the machine insured... and i wouldnt bother insuring one of them... unless you have some 5 grand plus atv off the show room floor its not realy worth it... When something breaks its not hard or that expensive to replace a part... unless you kill the transmission or motor then it can get expensive... but not that much that you cant afford it without insurance..

That would be way to much for a blaster... we bought 2 of them for no more then 500 i cant remember exactly how much it was

Haven't you ever used a weed whacker or a chainsaw? You take you can of gas, add the correct amount of oil to the can, put the lid on and shake it up. Except for a 2-stroke atv you should be running a high quality oil and premium, not regular and oil from the hardware store.

As long as you have it correctly jetted for your altitude and conditions, there should be no problems. Some 2-stroke oils do perform better in the cold than others, so you would want to be sure the brand you choose can handle the low temps.

Its not hard to mix gas, fill a gas can, add a measured amount of oil(bottle has marks), and shake it a few times just to be sure its mixed well. Then you pour it in your ride and go. With something like this make sure you run an oil designed for AIR COOLED engines, not outboard motor oil.

Nerf bars are not neccesary. Ever seen a dirtbike with anything under the pegs? IMO nerf bars are for the track racers that change their position on the quad and lean so dam n much that the more area available for choosing where to put your feet the better.

Okay, just to try and get more feel for things: What would be the best possible quad I could get for about... 1500 max... So I know what to shoot for when it comes on craigslist...

I have seen raptors for as low as about $2500... but thats a tad high for my budget... But I have also seen Blasters for about $1500....

ATVs are rider active.... you have to lean and change position... even off the track.... else you risk a roll over... and you wont turn well....

As for nerf bars on your comment: Do you see dirtbikes with a wheel directly(not offset) behind the peg... I didnt think so....

Okay, once again bringing up Raptors... they usually make a few different versions of their atv's. Biggest difference being engine size, ground clearance (camber), and gearing.

sport atvs can handle trails well... some of them depending on the trail better then a big bulky Utility atv..

Both of my friends are saying Utility for our part of the woods. But, I am thinking maybe go sport utility, if I can find one cheap enough.

Whats your oppinion? Could someone take a look at the RI craigslist, and see, out of whats popping up frequently, I should shoot for? Under $1500 max $2000, and what I could try to talk them down to.

Also, whats best: Pull start, kick start, or electric? And whats the cheapest to maintain?(I imagine its not electric..lol)

blaster will be fine banshees you will kill yourself.. them things are ****in nuts never rode a trx 400... just go with sport if you go fast enough you wont get stuck... you should be able to get a used atv for under 1000.... best is kick start.. and electric.. kick starts.. i cant say i have ever go dead... most electric starts have a kick or pull back up.. if you get kick make sure you have a good pair of riding boots or boots... i have a pair of converse that i riped the sides of them from slippin off the kick starteer... also jacked my foot up good

You will have plenty of fun on a blaster, the great thing about smaller engined bikes/quads is they change hands often and don't really depreciate after the first couple times it changes hands. So if ever get good enough to ride the little 200 to its limits you can sell it for what you paid and buy somethign bigger.

Yea, that I understand. There is a time and a place for everything: Slow and Cautious in public/on trails; Fast and Extremely Cautious on race tracks/open fields that have been fully reconnoitered.
