well if that dont beat all, considering i did delete the pictures from photobucket today and marked the album private. well i'll ask now that robertdjung undo or delete my image from this website. i guess any photobucket using poster should expect the same from this place then?

you seem to have lost sight of the fact that people who post images of their projects are not compensated for it in any way, and i do reserve the right to take my ball when i go home

that's quite a coincidence, me choosing a pic at random from someone who has no clue how forums differ from other forms of internet interaction. clearly, i have no idea why you're hostile towards DIYGK, and it's none of my business...nor do i care. but here's my take on the matter, after 20 years of forum usage at all levels.

your options, when it comes to public forums, is to join or NOT join, post or NOT post.

you joined and you posted...and noone forced you to.

I think what happened is that I chose purely by accident a pic from someone who's mad at the forum for whatever reason.

well, i've learned a bit more about what happened here...and candidly i'm glad it happened, because it's the perfect example of why IMG standards are necessary for a smooth format.

there IS another option available to the forum, and that is to disable IMG tags...

using the same random pic from 'wolfie's picasaweb/google gallery, i'll post only the link without IMG tags...and what you get is the image in a new window, which gives the viewer the option to load it or not...

now, this doesn't protect the forum against "lost content" but at least it keeps the forum's format clean...you may wind up with a dead link if the pic or gallery's deleted, but you won't have a big empty space with a red X as is the case with the other example i used.

and this method also works out great for most mobile users because you can view the image correctly on your device, if you choose, then return to the topic for easy reading.

all that said, i still prefer clickable thumbnails.

edit: how do i get only the working link & not the entire gallery? first open, then right-click the desired image, and click on "properties"...copy the entire URL and paste in your post wherever you like.

and the other benefit is that a large image won't expand the thread-view and make reading difficult.

addressing bandwidth while posting: once you've uploaded a pic, you're finished, doesn't matter where you put it. now you have the choice of using the "manage attachments" or embedding an image or just using the link.

in other words, you make the choice of what choice to give to
your readers, or as i like to call them, your fellow members.

btw, if you embed the image, you'll use some more bandwidth when you submit & view your own post.

addressing bandwidth while viewing: you'll use some bandwidth while loading the preview-thumbnail, but you have the choice of downloading the full image or not. if the image is embedded in the post, you have no choice until it's too late. if it's a plain (new window) link, the choice is back in your hands.

clearly, having a preview and choice makes for the easiest reading, but uses a wee bit of bandwidth, unless you choose to open the thumbnail. having a link and choice would be second best for reading, and uses the least amount of bandwidth, unless you choose to follow the link. having an embedded image ('specially a huge one that messes up the view) and no choice, well that ain't no fun at all.

an author who really wants maximum exposure & response will consider the needs of the reader when choosing how to present images.

but if other people are concerned about photo theft, (cough cough bunch of crap) then dont post pics. why have a private album when you want to show your pic DUHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

to clarify...once the pic's on photobucket you can paste the URL into the "manage attachments" window instead of directly into the post. that process requires no extra bandwidth and only a few more seconds of your time.

I cannot see how a few pictures can hurt you bandwidth so hardly, unless you get like 1GB a month, which I cannot imagine.

What's the average monthly bandwidth you have in the USA? Seems like a lot lower than here.

FYI-to open the "manage attachments" window you have to "go advanced" then click the paperclip. you can then either (1) browse the pics on your device and upload directly to the forum, or (2) paste a URL and copy the image from photobucket to the forum. whichever way you choose, you still upload only one time.

Nodroz, the average (contracted) full-speed data plan in the USA is 3GB for $30...with $10/GB overage charge. that's been slowly changing, but it will never be cheap here. personally i am on a 300MB/$20 (the lowest possible with AT&T) plan because i now have cable internet at home.

but, if you peruse the topic more closely you'll see this isn't only about bandwidth, but also about reader-comfort when viewing different methods of posting images.

Actually it does not work that way, this is what i get. No way to choose file for direct upload, choose file button is disabled.

well, shoot...i thought an iPad would be even easier to use than a BB...it looks like you can use the URL feature? care to test for us? why i ask is, if you can get the image onto the forum proper, it can't ever be lost remotely.

Oh, we're talking about 3G internet for on your mobile phone? This clears up about the bandwidth, I agree.

I have read the topic thoroughly and I noticed that about everybody prefers the thumbnail photos. You can see all the pictures in mini and if you want to see them bigger, just click them. Y'all convinced me about this, so I am going to use it now also.

If I take photos with my mobile phone, I upload them to photobucket. Then I use the link from photobucket to attach them to my post on this forum. It works perfectly, as augidog already stated above.
