ps-my family was all about figure-8 and demo-derby back in the 70's...riverside park, agawam MA. we attended (dad participated) the "wide world of sports" championships in islip NY regularly.

Hey augidog & ML-TOYS,
Here's a pic of my old 1970 firebird street-stock I raced at several local 1/4 mile clay oval tracks back in around 1990 or so:

i've just moved to coos bay OR and it's my understanding there's a hard-pack dirt oval 10 miles south of here...i hear it has HUGE banks. can't wait for my move-in budget to settle down so i can start going to the races again.

Here's another pic of me and the same car from when I was building it at the auto shop I worked at. It had a 60-over HO 455 poncho engine/and a full manual turbo 400 tranny. I welded the spider gears up so it had a locked rear end. That sucker was a torqe monster and would Annihilate the tires all the way through 1st, second and 3rd on pavement, but I couldn't ever get it to hook-up/handle very well at the track because the engine was so much heavier than all the small block chevys that typically won at my tracks.

However I did manage to win one of my heat races and my best finish was a 2nd in a main before I blew this engine sky high and sold the car whole car off for more than I'd invested in it.

islip speedway huh, well that was a while ago.

i did the derby out in riverhead.
my car was different than all the rest out there, guys worried about getting their radiators hit, well i didnt even run one. took the top hose and connected to the lower hose, had the system filled to the max and had bottles of sealer in it too. run the heat and dont shut car off and it wont overheat in the amount of time derby lasted. once the race was over we had an intake valve for cool water and a relief valve setup to relieve the hot water slowly until motor cooled down.

most guys chained the hood and trunk, not me. if you put threaded rod every 8 to 10 inches around the hood and deck lid it makes the body much stronger. i destroyed a guys car with the rear quarter of mine and all i had was a small dent.
even had the radio maxxed out.

back in "the day" you couldn't modify anything, except maybe wrapping the distributor cap in electrical tape in case it cracked, but only strip it down and chain the doors shut but not hood or trunk, only remove the springs.

lincolns and cadillacs were prized for the amount of space between the grill and engine, you were allowed to take the fan spacer out to make more room. and everyone wanted ford station wagons, too, 'cuz you could backup into sh*t all day long with those.

did you ever have a chance to experience "demolition football" where a beetle or corvair was the ball and two teams of 5 would compete to push it against the far wall?

Do any of you guys currently run in derbys? I havnt ran one in a few years. I've done at least 10 compacts. Only built one for the heavy class. It was a 73 Ford wagon. I found the full-size class was too much work. Work on a car for weeks and spend a couple grand for 20min of fun. Everyone in the full size class here get waaaay too serious about this stuff. Difficult to compete on a budget. The compacts are where it's at. They're cheap and you can have one ready in a day. I built a cage to go around me, the fuel cell, and the battery box. I just grind the welds off when I'm done and the cage is ready to go in the new car. Made for quick builds.
