You know those motors from razor? Yeah, dont get those. Usually you can get descent electric motors from washers and dryers, sounds crazy but you would be supprised. Other than that i think you would need a dc to ac current converter (from the batteries to the motor) but besides a throttle controller that should be all of the basics you would need

Jeez..

well two seater karts are generally heavy, so you need a bit of oomph alright;
but there is still no way to tell what motor you would need.

Why?
Well the lightest possible two seater road kart would need a completely different motor if you want to go say 7mph or say 40mph..
A heavier kart again needs an even bigger motor.
If the passengers are two 10yo kids it'll be a different motor than it'd be for two 250lbs adults..

you see where I'm going?!

washing machine motors are generally crap for a kart (seriously!) descent is correct though..
on a steeper descent the washing machine motor will be just fine...
it's just not a decent motor for going back up that hill again :D

Also, washing machine motors these days are universal motors, they'll happily run with DC, no need for a DC/AC converter at all.

Don't get me wrong, those motors are superb for some applications.. a go kart is just not one of them..
especially not a two seater kart.

speaking of which..
you might want to find an old golf cart (electric of course) that way you have a motor, a matching controller and maybe even some other parts for your build, like wheels, steering etc.

Well, there are alot of factors on deciding on what motor you need, like are you going to be mainly on street, hills or no hills, offroad, ratio, and how much the go kart will weight with the riders on it.

In America we use only single phase AC induction motors in our washers and dryers. If speed control is needed then we use 400 Hertz, 3-phase AC induction motors with single phase input VFD to 3-phase output for the motor.
