A friend and I are building a go kart for fun. I have a 10hp Briggs and Stratton. We have eight inch wheels 9.5 wide by 15.5 tall on back with 3.5 inch wide by ten tall up front.they are all smoothies :) The rear are on a differential.
My main question is about a sprocket size.
We are going to set it for 35 chain but before i buy any sprockets i want to know what will work best.
9,10,12? for the drive clutch sprocket
and what driven sprocket size should we use, we want a mix of acceleration and speed.
We have access to a plasamCam table so we can cut any size sprocket and want to switch on and off for feel.
Suggestions would be awesome on the drive clutch sprocket tooth number since we have to buy it.
Thanks!

i would go with a normal 6:1 ratio and thats just a 10t clutch to a 60t on the axle.

by the way, where did u get that differential? im looking for one.

It may work, but is far from optimal.

Try an 80 tooth (or preferably larger) sprocket...you'll be amazed at the all around performance increase.
With your current ratio, you are not getting all you can out of your engine (50% ?).

Testing

We have the car mostly assembled with a 12tooth drive and a 60 tooth driven sprocket. With the 17 dia. rear wheels, we hit 48 miles per hour. Acceleration is actually pretty good, alot better than we expected. Anybody know of any engine mods we can do?
We have a 10hp Intek Briggs and Stratton. 305cc. We were looking into a cold air type intake but we do not know what we need?
Any other mods?

If it were me I would opt to go with a #40/41 chain and sprocket setup as opposed to the #35 setup especially with those larger tires and wheels. It will just make it a little more beefier of a setup. less chance of busting chains and stripping teeth on the sprockets.

Your engine is a very popular choice in open-class kart racing, there's all kinds of speed parts available for it. The racers call it 'the 305', you'll find info and sources of speed parts in this google search link.
