Low ratio, just so that we speak the same language.. HIGH numbers 10:1, 12:1 etc...

high ratio therefore low numbers 4:1, 3:1 etc...

right...
positives: good chance of moving around even up the steepest hills,
negatives: less chance of breaking speed records ;)

i thought if the ratio is low number you get more speed

If you are referring to say 4:1 versus 10:1 you would be correct. 'Sid was simply explaining how the term's can get you into trouble if you didn't have any experience with them. We've seen that many time's here, and he was trying to get things straight up front.

Just for grin's, though, let's try this.....

4:1 ratio means that the engine rotates 4 time's to make the axle turn once. This equals speed, but also means gutless unless you have power to burn.

10:1 ratio means that the engine has to rotate 10 times to rotate the axle once. Very slow, but you could almost pull up tree stump's, even with a small engine.

Hopefully this helps you get your head around this...
