What exact engine do I have?

Okay, I beleive I have a Briggs and Stratton model 6. The pics of my own engine wouldn't work, but there are two pics of a motor jsut like it below (minus the carb setup, and the color, mine is turquoise). The pin number is: 143302 0163 01 423030

My first question is: is this motor really a model 6?

My second question is: my carb leaks like a because it is split in the middle before it curves up to go to the air filter. Does anybody have a remedy for that? Or know if I could get a nother carb setup from Briggs or from another engine?

i think its year is 1942. not sure when briggs changed there numbers up.alot of briggs look that way^. are those numbers off your engine?

I doubt they had recoils in 1942. I think it was all wrap-and-pull and kick start.

I believe briggs changed their date method a while back. Not sure when though.

Looks 1970ish style to me. Great condition too.

Also clayton, is it cast iron? I would think an engine from 1940's would. Is it super heavy, like 60 pounds?

Updraft carby, looks like a 2/3/4/5hp motor, leaning towards the 2/3HP. Serial number doesn't add up though.

Hi Clayton. Like B man says, it looks as if you have a engine manufactured in 1942. I was trying to ID the rest of it from your codes, but the document i was using was confusing me a bit. Maybe being so old the codes changed a bit.

I have an old 3.5HP Briggs. Runs like a champ. IF I remember correctly, mine was manufactured in 1976 (the year I was born).

@ Clayton: Model 6 (old and new) is full cast iron.
Pic supplied is aluminum. Probably 6hp (14cu. in.) if number you supplied is correct.
Model 6 was 1.5hp depending on governed speed. If it were a model 6, data plate would specifically say so.
I have 2 of them...one with recoil and one without.
Engine in pic (red) is far newer than 1942 and is not a 143302 block.
I agree with Oscar on serial but for a different reason (I think). That numbering system did not exist in 1942.
To positively identify the year of manufacture I need the date code located on inside surface of flywheel and will indicate somewhere around 1959 to 1965.
All B&S cast iron blocks were phased out in late 1957.

Okay, I'll get the code from the inside of the flywheel cover. Anyway is is heavy as ****, so it probly is cast iron. It has a recoil, and has a different air cleaner (it is bigger around and taller) and the gas tank is in the same mounting spot but is bigger.

My grandpa bought the enigne (unfortunatley he is dead) and my dad never ever ran the motor. Also all the stickers are mostly peeled off and the plate with the serial number had writing on it but it is rubbed off! Trust me it is more than 1.5hp, I have ran it once on my kart, and it is like a 5hp+

Yeah Blue, it is like 60lbs, lifting it around is a bigger chore than my moving my clone.

Did not say it was. Number you submitted is 6hp. A model 6 is 1.5hp.

Oh sorry I misread. I did try decoding the serail number myself but i phoned briggs and they wouldn't talk to me casue it was for a kart, and the site I was on confused me.

Yeah, I didn't realize that it was a big deal running her on a kart, so when they asked me waht it was for I naturally said it was for a kart.
