I have a John Deere r72 racing mower with a Side shaft Briggs 8hp I locked the rear axle and it currently has a 50 tooth sprocket. I have 16in tires so a centrifugal clutch is out of the picture. I've been looking at torque converters but am new to them which one should I go with? Thanks

me, i have a 9 hp with 16 inch tires and a 50 tooth sprocket on the rear axle and a 10 tooth on the jackshaft so we are almost on the same way.

you should buy a 40 series torque converter, it don't need to be a comet .the sadly thing with a 40 series is that you need to also get a jackshaft.

what is the total weight with you on the go kart? because the weight also has a big impact to now which one you need

while a series40 will be good,
8hp is just the amount a series30 can still handle (well, actually they can handle a lightly modified 8hp engine as well ;))

plus it's cheaper, comes (if you want) as a Kit with Jackshaft (in the backplate of a TAV Kit)
and most of all, it provides a 10% overdrive, so it's the FASTER result in the end
(using the same ratio 10 -> 50)

Only if you intent to heavily modify the 8HP eninge of yours,
or upgrade to something beefier (11, 13, 16 hp... etc)
then you really should get a series 40 TC just to be prepared for the future :D

I've only done a few mods to it like a straight pipe, removed governor ,Polish and port I plan on adding a tach as well

if you think it's well above 10hp; then a series 40 would be a safe bet.
if i's just barely crossing that line, you might get away with a series 30 for the cost of a slightly higher than normal belt wear.

that's all fuzzy, especially since gtc still lists the TAV Kit as "good up to 13hp";
which the original wasn't (or at least wasn't advertised as such) neither any other clone.
*shrugs*

You could try of course, but in the end, it's your money...
and if you want to be sure it'll handle that power easily (and more) then a series 40 is the way to go.
it's (with the same ratio) not as fast as a series 30, but you could always adjust the sprockets to dial that in ;)

I think I might go with the 30 series because this is an ice racer so it's not like I'm going to be climbing lots of hills.

Thats what I was thinking. Sid made it sound like there was a choice, but isn't a 40 series 1" and 30 series 3/4"?

Well, you can but, it would be much simpler to just get a 40 series & be safe; wouldn't you kick yourself if you machined down the shaft & fitted a 30 series, only to have it spit belts every other minute because they can't handle the torque?

I did, because THERE IS a choice ;)

So no, the series 30 comes in two sizes( 3/4" & 1") for the driver
and two for the driven (5/8" and 3/4") which comes in 6" and 7" diameter (both bores),

and the series 40 driver comes in two sizes as well ( 7/8" and 1")
and the driven in three sizes (5/8", 3/4" and 7/8")
for the 7.5" driven and just the 8.5" driven is solely available in 3/4" bore

that is, if it's Comet (info taken from the manuals)
different clones might be available in less or more options;)
But the series 30 1" bore Kit is on ebay every now and then...

The high gear is -as I said- 10% overdrive on a series 30..
and since the high gear on a series 40 is 1:1
that 10% is what you'd get.

go to the speed calculator,
enter your wheel diameter and the approximate rpm,
then the 5:1 ratio for a series 40 (axle: 50, clutch: 10)
and a 4.5:1 ratio for a series 30 (axle: 45, clutch: 10)

Assuming the ratio is good for wheelsize and weight, that should give you an idea ;)

It SAYS it is rated to 13HP, but if you read itsids post here:
