What did I get myself into?...

Well, here goes... I am kinda a been there done that kind of guy that loves to share info... Had karts, mini bikes, mopeds, atv's, dirt bikes, then graduated to fast cars, 4x4 trucks, Jeeps, then a wife and kids!!! Also never had any money so I had to build and fix it all with what God gave me...

Just ended up with a kart project tonight that was a little more than expected.. Also bought an easy fix about 2 weeks ago...

Wasn't going to join another forum, but what the heck.. Have learned there is no better place than forums to learn from other that enjoy the same hobbies...

The easy fix kart is a streaker made by Ken Bar.... Needs some work but a couple of hours and I had it running good enough for this fall...

Project kart, that's a different story... Instant got to get more info and ideas... Will figure out the forum and pics and get them posted!!!

Here is the project... Was kinda of expecting a simple 2 seater that turned out to be a lot more than that... Was hoping the 5 hp Briggs I had at my parents and simply centrifugal clutch... Now it's looking like a lot more than that...

That frame looks brand new. That's a clean open platform there!

That Streaker has got some serious meats on the back of it. That thing looks serious.

Thanks for the welcome.. Yes the frame is brand new/never used. It was a prototype frame that has been hanging in a guys garage for years... He was always gonna build it for his son but never did.. His son is grown now and he said he would give me a sweet deal on it for my boys... I guess it is project time so it doesn't see the same fate at my house as it did his..

The streaker came with those tire on it ...Can only assume they are original size... It has a 6.5 hp robins motor/engine that pulls them nicely.. It is a little underpowered with me on it on my inlaws back lane which is a pretty good hill..

Welcome to the forum. Cool project you have there. Unless you gear quite low, I think a 5HP might be a bit underpowered for that big kart and tyres

My word!!! That's quite a chuck of metal you got there! Id dare say something 'that' big could probably use some sorta suspension IMO(but im the guy who puts his kart in the trunk of his Toyota Camery solo).

It IS clean! and definitely NOT wimpy at all! 5hp 'would' be abit tiny for such a frame/wheel IMHO. Something 'that' big Id shop round for a 8hp(minimum) w/ a TC and JShaft it to round bout 7:1(high end) and that thing should pull and bookit down the road! A lil cent. clutch, IMO, would kinda be 'pushin' the limits of its ability(weight, hp, wheel ratio).

Welcome to the forum! That certainly is an interesting frame. I wonder how it cam to be, and landed in the other guy's hands. I do agree that your best bet would be a larger displacement engine and a CVT such as a Comet 40 would allow you make the most of it.

Ultimately the goals for the cart is to build something that can be governed down and set up for my 6 year old to ride...Going to set it up with forward and aft controls and possible a passenger brake..

I definitely agree with the larger engine and torque converter...Also on the bubble of trying to find a junked out ATV that I can steal suspension components from.. Ideally if the guy I got it from comes up with the spindles and steering components he thinks he has I will just put it together and upgrade down the road...

Hmm sounds like wut i did...(probably over half this forum members as well. Therefore, post updates(w/ pix) n when you run across an issue or 'idea'... share the knowledge n post it. Might find theres a cheaper/better/easier way of getting it done. Lord knows how many ideas these guys have talked me out of for safty, ease, or just plain rediculousness lol!

But honestly if it werent for 'this' forum and its knowledgeable monkey's (grease ofcourse...) my kart would 'still' be a 'toy'... An unsafe, rediculous, questionable investment... Hehe

Okay, going all in and ordering new parts to build will probably be cheaper than the divorce I am going to be getting, but I kinda like what we have going...

Been sourcing parts at different sights... Was thinking a 13hp predator motor when they go on sale... Good? Bad? Have one of the older blue clones on a log splitter that has been getting the job done for several years... Might know where a Honda GX240 is that needs some work... If the price is right might look into it.. Not many options for performance up grades, but know ways around that..

Knock off torque convertors? Get quite a few mixed reviews... Are they really that bad?

This thing is going to consume me!!!

Re:Honda GX240. There are performance parts available, just not as many as there are for a GX200. Also, don't be shocked at the price, the genuine article usually sell for a lot more than a clone...

thats a **** nice lookin frame, makes me wish my wheelbase was shorter. The robin is plenty for the kids. The predator may be a bit too much after everything. Stay under 8 hp and keep the pto size down and you keep the less expensive options on the table. If you're gonna run tires that big you will want a torque converter.

That is one heavy a$$ frame, and with 2 people on there you are going to need at least 8HP
