Top speed has more to do with gearing and tire size than particular engine. http://www.diygokarts.com/speed-calculator.html

I strongly disagree!!

simple fact: moving weight requires power, moving weight fast requires exponential power.

A 6.5hp engine can get you moving no faster than X (depends indeed on weight, gear ratio and wheelsize)

scrap the 50mph idea... even 45 will be very hard to reach.

a 6000rpm engine (modded 6.5hp clone engine) a torque converter and a 5:1 ratio on 11" wheels will be needed to crack the 45mph (still not 50 mph...)

the modding of an engine alone requires much more than 50 bucks!

So no!

Well 16hp at 3800 rpm 6:1 and 11" tires is 21 mph

and 16hp at 3800 rpm 5: 1 and 15" tires is 34mph

Strongly disagree if you like. but I stand by my statement.
" Top speed has more to do with gearing and tires than HP".

But yes for 50 bucks he is going nowhere and either way 50mph is gonna be difficult.

Sure within the limits dictated by the engine
top speed is set by the gearing (and that includes wheelsize)

but you said it's more about gearing than hp, and that's simply wrong.
take the same gear ratio and wheels on a 2.5hp B&S for example

2.5hp @3800 5:1 ratio 15" wheels...34mph???

more like 0mph since you'll burn your clutch in an instant.

Now, what's more important ...
the ratio or the hp ?

(For those that dont know my builds...) I have a GX200 modded to 10hp @5k rpms running on 16" wheels runnin a TAV2. Top speed is 45-51mph (depending on whos fat rump is on it). If I had a cam/billit rod(+hp), Id have the ability to travel ~54-56mph due to the higher end torque. Recently, I got a HF212 (for my trike) only thing modded is no governor (6.5hp @5k rpms). I removed the GX200 and put in the HF212... top speed of 44mph w/ me driving. So technically I dropped 3hp and lost 5-6mph... hmmm.

Not trying to argue... just stating a fact of comparison... gearing/wheel size does constitute a mathematical topspeed... but only if you leave out the 'other' equations in the formula... drag/torque/climate/traction/inertia/momentum are a few 'other' to calculate in for an 'ACTUAL' topspeed.

Unless someone like me is 'giving away' their stuff... doubtful youll be able to get to the desired 45-50mph for <200-300$+.

... and BTW...

Sid doesn't reply all that much, and when he does 9/10 times he posts facts. There are a bunch of #'s and formulas in his replies mainly cause NOONE can competently argue w/ math. Even though EVERYONE has an opinion... VERY few have facts... but to each their own.

It is possible to get a kart to go that fast for that kind of money if you know what you are doing and are able to do it safely, there are plenty of used snowmobiles that are dirt cheap that have everything that you need to do so and the engines have more power and performance than any utility engine with enhancements ever could have or achieve. I have seen entire sleds in my location that run that have been listed less than 50 dollars but in order to get something that cheap one would have to live in a location where indeed snowmobiles were available. (Hint)

I am just saying He said TOP SPEED. and
Well 16hp at 3800 rpm 6:1 and 11" tires is 21 mph
and 16hp at 3800 rpm 5: 1 and 15" tires is 34mph
That being said you can do the exact same TOP SPEED with 6.5hp. It will just take you longer to get there.
But if you want to be ridiculous and suggest 2.5hp. I can also slow down 16hp to a top speed of 18mph or less with.... wait for it... Gearing.
15" wheels 5500rpm 16hp at 13:1 is 18mph

And just because coincidence struck...
Clutch Getting Hot and Slipping?
clutch has 12 teeth, axle sprocket has 72 teeth, tires are 15in Help Please!

15" wheels & 6:1 sounds familiar... burning clutch...
And although I'm only guessing.. I'm guessing 6.5hp
Now what do you think would happen with -you said would work- 5:1 ratio? :stir:

...just sayin'

'sid

PS with only a clutch a 15" wheel and a 6.5hp need ~8:1 ratio to not ruin said clutch

Actually The first kart I bought and still have and gets the most use by my 14yr old, Has a 212 predator 6.5 hp Bone stock. 12tooth clutch and 72 tooth axle sprocket with Carlisle 15x6x6 turf savers. Does not burn clutches.
Also 5:1 is a bit high yes but still reasonable, especially with the extra HP in my example.

"Clutch getting hot and slipping" was his second thread. In his first thread I told him check your gear ratio, It sounds like "Clutch getting hot and slipping" I also told him what I have (above) in his second thread. and that it works. Funny the guy now has a third thread, same question in 18hrs, so consider that source.

Sid it sounds like we have a difference of opinion here, I can respect that and will not hold a grudge on this forum. I will let you get the last word if you wish, and I will move on.

I use a 12 tooth clutch and a 72 tooth rear sprocket on my kart with 15 inch tall tires and my clutches have all been fine and my kart is not light and neither am I but I kind of feather the throttle from a standstill.
