yea cotter pin would work, just make sure there isn't too much play (if any), and as i mentioned, i would advise you try to make a rubber boot of some sort.

maybe a large piece of thin rubber hose/tubing, then two hose clams on either end, maybe cut some notches in the ends of the hose so it fits over the small 5/8" shaft better, would want to seal were you cut the notches though.

alright well based on thefact welds might break i am probably just going to drill a hole throough it put a cotter pin through and do that to both sides

i mean this isnt some 60+ kart that is going to be hitten the sand dunes so i mean i think this should work alright

If you are going to drill I would use a roll pin only. They will not losen up on you. You can buy a kit at HF for like $6. They kit had many sizes. Just drill the hole. and tap the roll pin in. The pin will fit snug in the hole.

There's also an idea. I would have said to get a 3/16" drill bit and a 3/16" cotter pin and allow the instability of your hand to open it up that little bit extra to let the pin slide through.

I know they use roll pins on shafts but most of the time there is a spline to help hold it. I used one on my BSR after I stripped the splines on the cheap steering shaft. Held tight.

Here is a pic where I used the roll pin. I stripped the splines on the shaft. I just drilled a hole right thru the neck and shaft. Then tapped in a roll pin. That being said I still had a nut holding it on.

When you drill the correct hole for the roll pin. The roll pin will roll smaller thru the hole. So there is no room for slop. Thats why it is open slotted like they are.

Then when you have the roll pin on. You can put a cotter pin or smaller bolt/pin thru the center on the roll pin for it is hollow.

I would try a few ways. Then lock your steering and try to break and twist it to see what works best.

I woulod have to see what you are drilling into and your setup to tell you to use it for sure. The above guy used and extension for some of his shaft. Did you notice that? In a case that fits tight like that I would use a roll pin. If you connection points are not super tight then I would bolt or weld it.

i should point out that bengo tryed to use a tool uni on his suzuki king quad kart and it failed

Get carbide bits and a punch.

Punch a dent, throw it in a vise, and go at it with the carbide bits.

I tried using a socket uni, i welded it to my steering shaft.
It was crap, there was heaps of play.
In the end i just used a uni from a car steering shaft.
