I would just go to the junk yard and find one for about $10. Look in the import section. I bet there is some laying on the floor or in the trunk. Maybe even $5. Like this

dont weld the uni on u will wreak it and can u image if the weld broke

get a keyed one

or go to the wreakers and get a cheap steering colum then u can use the slines and have proper bearings

okay the second link u put up their those look like theywould work great but the problem is i dont know what 5mm is in inches because i need it to slide over a 5/8 inch steering shaft also if i end up getting this could i take the bolts out of the U joint and drill a hole throught the steering shaft and run a bolt through it and tighten it down would that work

I used a Craftsman 1/2" flex joint. It's exactly 5/8" and only costs $7.00. I used it for steering linkage.

He probably welded it. You could also drill a hole in a side or two and thread them, then put grub screws in them and get them tight.

my idea along was just to drill through the the steering shaft and the u joint..... run bolt or whatever through it and then it would work

Yes. It will. A bolt (make sure it's at least grade 5 if not 8) or a hefty cotter or hitch pin.

drilling out the u joint and welding would be my suggestion.

few things to keep in mind are:

- strength, if this fails, it might not turn out too good. (i'm not a fan of welding the socket to the shaft then just snapping the u joint into the socket, could come off too easily, unlikely yes, but i still don't like it.)
- play, make sure there is very little to (preferably) no play in the system.
- consider that you may wish to disassemble the parts at some point, if everything is welded in place you will have to cut some stuff off.
- also consider how the u joint may wear in a dusty or dirty environment, most u-joints have rubber boots to prevent debris getting stuck in the u joint causing excessive wear.


maybe this would be a better choice, you can till use the socket u-joint, but if you have a little bit of money it may be worth your while.

That's why I feel he should secure it with a cotter pin. A nut can back off and a hitch pin and be pushed out, but if you slide a cotter pin through and bend it, it's not coming out without tools.
