Welding up body seams?

Is it stupid to weld up the body seams around the suspension/fenders ect? For the sake of stiffness

Derby drivers do it alot. Us offroad VW guys weld the spot welded seams on our cars and the trailing arms, and frame heads on the old VW bugs.
