Hey guys, I've got a live mower axle I'm going to use on my kart, its smaller than my original axle but it fits the wheels so im using it. So my question is:

It has a little disc brake on it that is really just intended as a park brake and is way too rough and stupid for use as an actual rotor, however the cutouts on it line up perfectly with my sprocket hub, so i was wondering if it would be feasible to mount some threaded rod in these spots, weld them in, and put the sprocket on it with some nylock nuts or something, possibly mount the actual carrier on the other side just as some bracing. The holes in the rotor are these trapezium shaped slots that get wider as they go closer to the center of the rotor, they only go about 1.5cm or so in from the edge. I could probably fit a nut in the hole as well for some extra strength.

I intend to give it a shot anyway just for the sake of building something, if it doesnt seem strong enough then ill just take it apart. But do you guys reckon it will work?

Thanks in advance

Yea I should have known not to use threaded rod. I've read not to use it time and time again on here hahahaha.

So yea, some decent strength bolts. I might make some little drilled insert pieces for the slots, rather than weld the bolt in, then weld the inserts in place cause as you can see in the photo, the sprockets holes will be right out in the slots and might move around too much.

Anyway, tell me what you think, I've got school holidays coming up soon and heaps of time to build stuff so I'll get a chance to play around with it.

Oh and I'm trying to use the rotor rather than the carrier because I've got an axle that the rotor fits and I dont want to stuff around getting other stuff for the different size.

Your work in photos has inpired me on my current build. I should re-do my brake disc (same way with sprocket in my photos) design following your design here.

Currently I welded the screw on the bearing housing and then later sit the brake disc on it.

Thanks.

If the sprocket mount works then the brake disc one should too, might aswell give it a shot I guess?

My theory is, if it works roll with it, when it breaks fix it so it wont break again :p In saying that, I've never really tested that theory haha

Why is your brake disc riding on a bearing? I may have missed the reasoning earlier in the thread.

Over in Malasia (or Borneo, where Simon lives) There are no cheap hubs. You have got to make do with what is available. Simon has come up with some really ingeneous ideas.

Thanks Landuse for speaking on my behalf. That's very true, it is not easy to find hub sold here. If I want the machinist to do it for me, it is very expensive and not worth it.

So, I need to be creative enough by modifying whatever source / material I have here to get what I want. Well that's a great challenge for DIYer like us.

You should export some parts over to Australia :p

It would cost me at least $80 to walk into a shop and buy a maxtorque clutch, nothing flash just a simple 3/4" bore one.

I got a comet from the states for $45 shipped.....and they wonder why shops are going out of business

its even worse if you dont live near a big city ( i live on the mid north coast) theres is literally no other option then importing. not one single part on my kart that wasent made made by me was bought locally. kinda sucks really considering theres a huge karting track near where i live.

Newcastle wouldn't be much better. We have 1 kart shop that sells 35 pitch chain and sprockets, thats about it for diy go karting. Aswell as the insane prices. $30 for 3ft of chain. Its cheaper to import 10ft than it is to buy 3ft over here :( Seriously, a Harbor Freight or something would be nice over here...even in Sydney would do, I'd be willing to go for a day trip just to Harbor Freight :p

Panman, you near Newcastle? I don't really know any other kart tracks than Newcastle, and it's pretty big :p

u guys are lucky to have 1 kart shop

we have nothing in Esperance WA

but as for parts u just gotta look around

as a farming based town we have loads of shops to sell ag parts so i can get bearings, chain, steel, car parts and bike parts for way cheaper than any kart parts

our chain is $40 for 5 metres

it was cheaper to make my fully suspended 250cc kart that it would be to make a standand yard kart with a lawn mower engine
i dont think id ever buy from a harbour freight i like my brand name stuff

Are there any franchise based ag shops that would possibly be over here? Names? haha

The hunter valley is one of the wine capitals of new south wales and its right outside newcastle :) I figure there should be one of these ag shops out there somewhere. Brand name stuff is nice, but have you seen the prices at HF. It is insane
