It just dawned on me, spread over all of the users of this forum, there is enough knowledge of go kart design to create the greatest go kart in history.....Well, diy go kart at least lol. This is all theoretical of course haha, theres no way a United Nations of Go Karting design could actually be built by everyone since were spread out.....But how cool would it be to design one :surrender:

Well, since we wont actually make it....who needs a budget lol....But we should make some rules for it so it doesnt end up just being a car lol

I got some pics of the most killer kart I have ever seen. Hands down it is the sickist kart I ever seen. When my wife gets home I wil post pics.

This thing was fast. I got a few pics and the camera died. Driving to the coast last weekend I seen a kone corse set up in a parking lot. I went beack to check it out and saw it. It was brand new and first testing ever. I did not get any details but the few pics I got. This thing was small and it was fast. Stuck to the track like glue. Piture a mini indy car. Most of been college students. You guys may no more when I post pics.

Stay tuned

looks like that big black pipe is for the airfilter. See teh little green thing sticking off the end of it? The silver one is exhaust.

Im pretty sure over here the universities compete in something like formula sae....when I was at a uni open day they were saying that the rules say the air intake must be no larger than an inch or something.....They were saying how hard it is to get a 4 cyl bike engine to run off just that...It was crazily awesome

IDK, I was driving down the hi-way and seen them. I pulled over and watched for a few. I then spent the time to go to the next exit and return to watch them.

So you can say it made me walk across the street to check it out. This team must be local to my area. I will see what I can find out.

The SAE cars are amazing things. But in the spirit of DIY its poor practice to say "they are the best I give up" :D

What do you guys reckon defines a go kart?

I think maybe, rear engine, very small suspension travel if any, Open cockpit, rear brakes only, ....

Screw it lets design some monster racing vehicle better than the SAE hahaha. Although I do think someone should have a go at designing an engine :idea2:

EDIT: I have a cool idea for wheel hubs with disc brakes that I designed in religion class today....Compulsory religion = drawing time :p

The first set of Photo's appear to show a CRF Honda engine , The shape of the cam cover looks very much like CRF honda . But the Intake set up some thing i have never seen before . I am thinking that there use of the black pipe has to do with a type of low speed ram air .

Yea, as I said before, maybe they have restrictions on the air inlet size, so using an expansion chamber style thing allows it to work better ? I dunno lol

I think if u try to design the best kart u will always end up with a
SAE car

I mean that's what they are
Just karts that have been modifyed and improved hundreds of times

Id say the ultimate kart would be a question of money not design

I'd say almost anyone on here could design the best kart but few would afford it

Yea true....How about a thread for innovative things we see on karts? Basically anything that we havent seen before that seems smart and good. I havent got anything to add now lol, although as I was saying I did come up with a cool rear spindle design that a complete idiot could almost build lol

That's intresting

Like the helpful links one

Just really new and odd ideas that pop up every now and again

Most are useless but may be the exact answer to someone

Also it would be a good brainstorm idea

Yep, The useless ideas area is my forte.

One I came up with a few weeks ago is to use golf club shafts, which can be gotten off old clubs for a few dollars a shaft, as suspension components. Since they are designed to flex you could make rigid arms out of them with some rubber dampers. It would give some travel, not much, but it would make an on road kart heaps more interesting in terms of complexity and driving style, whilst also saving on weight compared to a normal shock setup.

I thought of it for a bike, basically have the whole back end on a pivot, with a few golf clubs running from the end of the swingarm back to the frame in front of the pivot, any movement would have to flex the clubs.

The best Kart build for SAE is basically parking lot cone racer . on a Kart track a shifter 125cc Kart would much quicker machine . Power to weight ratio the factor that make a standard Shifter Kart the faster deal . But for a cone racer it would a toss . These are design project for the school to test what youngsters can do . On mine I went the sledge Hammer route Biggest engine the class would allow up to 510 , so a CRF450 at 63lb's with a total ready race Oval Kart @ 279 with a 245 we gross out at 524lb's with driver to meet min class weight for my engine combo is 445lb's . The SAE look like fun projects , but what you end up with is racer that is used for this one class year . And build a new racer the next year .
