Hello from just outside Winnipeg "Winter-peg" Manitoba !

I've had an urge to build my kids 5 1/2 & 8 a kart and I think this is the year. By the Tim I get around to it and the snow melts it should b June :)

I can build most anything and have the luxury of a father in law with a lathe and also a job at princess auto so parts are easy to come by and...a coworker has offered me a front axle off of a old lawn tractor. May b able to use that

Found a lot of good info an builds here an am looking forward to reading more and saying hi.

Tty all soon

Derek

Great, can you now fill out your profile to show that please :D

Probably not. Not much thinking went in to lawn tractor steering, apart from the thought that "it's only gonna be going 5-10mph"; more thought went into the rear axle...

If the kart is geared down & is only one wheel drive, you may get away with it, believe me, I tried it, it didn't work...

Oh, good to see you found the "Edit" button

One more little thing, some members may get a little frustrated &/or annoyed with your "abbreviations" (yeah, let's just say that :D); if you can, could you please try to use full words where/when possible

Thanks guys, yup, my sons new tablet was "fixing" my typing for me last night which is super annoying, so now the good ole laptop is showing my true speak. I can get my dander up with some of the abbreviations as well nowadays.

I did a bit more poking around and found the front axle from tractors isn't the most sought after for a cart, so on to bigger and better means of steerage.

Wish me luck. Some real cool stuff here. I'm into a few forums and like the home built stuff alot, whether its cars, tucks tools or Karts. Inventing is key

I built a metal roller last summer to arc stock up to 4" wide and at various radii using a tubing bender jack and some scraps.

I'm hoping to build some pergola brackets with it along with Kart parts and other various wrought iron details as well.

Best

Derek

PS - as time allows I'll post some of my handy work to check out in some albums

Welcome to the forum Derek.

Working at Princes is really going to help you a bit. You should get a staff discount. If you have a special running, can you get the special price and also the staff discount? I have always wondered about that.

Knowing someone with a lathe might also come in real handy

Welcome to DIYGK, Derek! You work at Princess Auto? I practically live there. Been working hard to memorise the important sections of the catalog... I'll give you my mailing addy, you can just start sending me everything slowly. Do me a favour, willya? Tell those guys that the 10hp diesel stationary engine is NOT a bloody seasonal item, they need to sell them in the winter for pete's sakes... LOL

Now- as both a go kart guy, AND a modified lawn tractor guy, I can honestly tell you that a lawn tractor front axle has NEARLY no value at all to a kart project. I did indeed use one on the Green Machine (topic search "Unveiling The Kids' Kart" if you like) but trying to make use of the architecture wasn't easy.

Thanks Doc, I do understand now as an employee, how the whole seasonal thing works. We got heaters in in September and I thought this is nuts, now, come Christmas, and the temps were on the lower side here, you may recall we were colder than the surface of Mars and one of the poles (N/S) at one point recently...and some of the heater numbers were already coming up discontinued.

Now I see we are selling hovercrafts....It is in the new flyer, at least the new one I saw yesterday. Seems like we'll be getting canoe paddles in next week too:smiley_omg:

It's a nice place to work but they need to pay more so I can bring more home.

thanks for the front end info, I've nixed the idea and will build fresh. I've got a bench seat ( search bench seat at the PA site and see them, reg $130, we had a blowout for some reason and they were marked at thirty bucks a few weeks ago ) I figured it would be a good seat for a two kid cart or for one big Dad !

Thirty bucks? Y'now... That annoys me. They were $75 here, down from $150. I thought about it and decided against. No hardware included. What makes me nuts, is the regional pricing. Why do I have to pay $75 for the same thing you're paying $30 out west? And this certainly isn't the first time I've seen this. However- ranting aside, I will continue to be a loyal customer...

Hovercrafts??? I gotta look that one up. Don't think they're selling in Ontario. Never seen that!

That's like asking "why do I pay $1.40 a litre for unleaded fuel when I'm 10k's from the refinery but it's $1.70 500k's away?" Simple answer, transport costs. I know, it's not right, why should only certain customers have to pay more based solely on their goegraphical location but, that's the way it is...

That's kinda funny. ... Because I never could figure out how gas- ( crude oil refined into gasoline/petrol ) is sourced @400 miles south of me and sold cheaper 200+ miles north of me....:ack2:

I'll try and get a SKU on the hovercraft for fun

JAnd I think that thirty bucks on the seat was a local special as we have another store on the west side of Winnipeg and I don't think they had the same pricing.

We have had some crazy sales to get rid of some product lately, at least in workshop where I work. Anyways sometimes it makes me crazy thinking of what gets marked down and sold when I'm not
in....

After you brought this up, I had to do some research. Indeed, I found the hovercrafts in the PA website, and lo and behold, in the flyer I recieved in the mail yesterday. Turns out the manufacturer is about 1.5 hours north of me. Interesting, but not $60,000 worth of interesting...

That is an added benefit at work. Twenty percent
Off of regular or sale prices. And one day a year
We get a night after close thirty percent off reg
Pricing and twenty off sales open to our friends
And family. And I get to talk about tools all day

Now how did you get MULE into that situation? :lolgoku:

Drove it in, took some pics, drove it out. Pretty capable little bugger it is. You know what's really impressive? The engine stayed running while it was parked there for the pics. Yup- carb all jacked up on a weird angle and all... Chugged a bit of black smoke when I throttled up to leave, but it didn't die! And yeah- go karts aren't altogether that capable in the snow, so bring on the MULE!

And now, back to your regularly scheduled thread...
