While I have absolutely NO tolerance for thieves and think they should get what they deserve if caught in the act, remember:
Most places have laws regarding how you deal with them.
Shoot someone over property and you're in for a mess of legal trouble.
Same if you lay a trap that really f's 'em upn and God help you if a child somehow innocently gets hurt.
A lot of good ideas have been mentioned, I go with the securing it as best you can and adding Lights/noise/camera technique.

Honestly, take an old lamp cord strip the ends. Attach to the frame. Unplug spark plug from ignition. Plug in lamp cord. I dare anyone to touch anything after that.
