Was starting a DIY kart project and saw there was a contest, so I joined.

...and I think joining this place will likely be the death of my disposable income for the next few years if I'm not careful.

I actually have a pile of bits and pieces on order for delivery before the weekend (hopefully, UPS seriously hasn't earned any service awards with me over the last couple decades). Just have to pick up some square tube at discount steel and get to chopping and slagging.

Right now all I have is some wheels and tires and a borrowed half barrel keg. The rest has been ordered. I'll start my build log and entry to the contest once I have a pile of stuff to snap pics of.

Haha, no worries, no drinking and riding....best no to talk about that I suppose.
The idea came to me while hanging out with a family friend. His family owns a local liquor store. We were discussing center of gravity on a barstool racer and there was an empty keg nearby and I had one of those eureka moments.
So, to answer the earlier question, yes, I plan to ride the keg. It will be empty, to avoid any open container issues and any issues with 15 and a half gallons of warm beer sloshing about. For lack of a more creative name, project:KegKart will do :)

thats awesome. but you should put one end of the keg on a hinge and act as a door, then have a six pack holder inside the keg.

It will likely happen further in the future. I want to get it on the road and running before I start doing fancy things like that. But yeah, that was discussed. I was thinking about getting a small plastic bin, setting it in there, then filling the rest of the bottom with spray foam for insulation. That way you could use it as a serious cooler. The top would need insulation as well. It'd be a bit of fab work, but it would be awesome. It would also need an internal drain to allow it to be dried out.

Like I said, the idea of making it a drivable beer cooler has not skipped my mind ;)

Also, half my parts arrived today. Axle, hubs, spindles, steering shaft and weldments, Axle weldments and bearing parts along with a big bag of bolts and such. Still waiting on the sprocket parts, clutch, brake parts and throttle/brake controls. That should arrive tomorrow. Then it's a waiting game for the caliper I ordered. We'll see if that shows up by the weekend.

Yep.

1 1/4" live axle, 12/60 (5:1) gearing, hydraulic caliper/brake. I'm using 5x5 and 5x7 racing kart wheels on track slicks for the time being. Though I may go with something more pedestrian for winter use, as I wholly intend to sip adult beverages and take it out on a frozen lake at some point. (It's Minnesota, we do that sort of stupid stuff here)
Steering will be in the form of a bike handlebar with twist throttle and lever brake. I'm leaving it open in the future for a cheap switch over to a shifted bike or snowmobile motor. Currently going to run a Predator 212, hooray for the 99 dollar special. I'll make do with that and a rejetting, intake and open exhaust for now.

So, in my excitement, eagerness and haste, I totally dove in headfirst and completely forgot to post a contest entry. Honestly, I am having so much fun goofing off in the garage that I don't care about making a contest of it. I sold off all my project cars, building a kart gives me my much needed "man time."

I will post up a build thread once I can get some of my pics together.
