As both my username and this threads title suggests my go kart idea I'm working on I have dubbed "Ward's Twin Oppy Special" (kind of a homage to the old pre 60s indy 500 cars) Anyway howdy my name is Steven I am in the preliminary planning stage of my project I was thinking of building a frame mounting two Briggs opposed twins side by side then running belts to a peerless gear box then run belts to peerless trans axles front and back. I'd use the back end of a craftsman all wheel steer lawn tractor as the front end. I want it to look like an early prewar indy racer. I figure that the gearbox would take some stress of the transaxles that way it doesn't end up like the John Deere RX75 I bought this past week that I pulled the deck off of then put a 4 inch pulley on the engine shaft and a 3 inch on the transaxle it really flew... for a day before the trans conked out! :mad2::

How about this for inspiration?
Indy 500, 1946.
Lou Fageol's "Twin Coach Special" that Paul Russo put in the middle of the front row.
4WD with two Offy midget engines, one in front and one in back.

Yes it will be a dual two cylinder awd go kart.
The only flaw in the drive train that I have found is that the 700 will reduce the rpms going to the front and rear transaxles but if I put a 8" pulley on the engines driving a 4" on a Jackshaft wil a 8" that drives a 4" on the 700 then repeat the process again between the 700 and the transaxles I figure I'll have enough rpms to get about 20 to 40 mph and I'll have plenty of torque. (Please let me know if I'm wrong!)
So to recap the engines will drive a peerless transmission which will drive the front and back transaxles.

I was thinking more along these lines:

Or would peerless final drives be better than the transaxles?

I figured out that peerless 820 transaxles are beefy so I will be using those and now I am trying to decide on whether to do chain drive or belt drive? I await your replies!

Belt to the transaxle probably the easier way to do it. Were you planning on having the transaxle locked making it a live axle or keeping it open to make turns a bit easier? Doc is a member on here (pops in every now and then), here's a video he made on making a locker for the 820. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJurT...

And of course it didn't copy right. Here's the proper link https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=1133s&v=XJurTvFQqsc

To accomplish differential locking and unlocking I plan to mount a sprocket connected to another sprocket on a electromagnetic clutch on a shaft do that on both sides of the transaxles so I can turn on and off the cliches to lock and unlock the differential. Any input on this idea?

An electric clutch... Is just that... An electro magnetic spinning platen and coupler....
When energized it transmits force... It however it is and on and off coupler...
Power is fairly consuming... So it needs a generator of sorts... Not a small vehicle type of application..

Here is a disassembled variant...

They are pretty common on newer lawn and garden tractor mower decks and other pto stuff for them, but after a few years and hundreds of hours, they become finicky and do not like to engage.

I might use toothed belts or PowerBand v belts to minimize slippage and increase longevity.

I have a Toro Zero Turn with one of those it's mowed my 8 acres for the past 4-5 years without fail that's where I got the idea from.

Average rpms on a mower engine is 3600 (I'm not sure on that) so an 8" pulley driving a 4" on a Jackshaft driving a 8" driving the 4" on the peerless 700 tranny with tol o matic 1:1 ragb (link below) driving am 8" driving a 4" on another Jackshaft driving a 8" driving a 4" on the 820 transaxle what would be the output speed be at the axle? The tires are gonna be 24x12-12 turf all around.

I know that the pulleys will quadruple the rpms of the input.
Would I need to do my outside locker on another Jackshaft between the transaxle to get 20-40 mph??

I'm a big guy 6'2" 228lbs so I need both torque and speed also the cart's going to have a body that looks like a cross between hot rod and a old race car. So it's going to be pretty big

So those clutches draw power during the entire time they're engaged?! Bet that gets nice and toasty! The clutch idea for the transaxle seems like a good solution, albeit a little complex for a go kart.. You can change how much each clutch engages to precisely tune your turning as well! otherwise I guess a solenoid or a relay and steering wheel switches could work.

Depends on the electric clutch/manufacturer... They work both ways.. Power to engage... Power to disengage..

Well my kart is going to be pretty complex so...

---------- Post added at 02:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:22 PM ----------

And I am only going to engage it for short periods of time.
That's because I'm really going to be driving on roads grass and gravel driveways.

---------- Post added at 02:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:26 PM ----------

By the way I might also use the kart to tow one or two self powered trail finish mowers to help the zero turn

Can anyone see my drawing of my idea? Or did the photobucket "please update account to enable 3rd party hosting" image show up?
