Hey, I am thinking about buying a 16hp Engine for my Kart. I have 300 dollars to spend and trying to find a good powerful Engine that will be able to bring me threw the woods and still have good speed.. I am thinking about buying the DuroMax Engine but not sure.

Any ideas on what engine to get?

Well, for $300 instead of getting a 16hp engine you should be able to find a 340cc (35hp) snowmobile engine with both clutches or a 250cc dirt bike engine with just under 40hp

Keep in mind, with that kind of power you may have to beef up your frame if it is not a buggy.

Ya, i forgot about that Jcotz, I guess that I'm just so sued to over engineering things i have a hard time imagining that others don't do the same. I could put 700cc 150hp sled engine on my kart without any adverse effects, isn't 1.5" heavy wall tubing a lovely thing :)

Yeah beefing up my frame is no problem because i can weld and have a welder. I cant really find any i look on CL but cant find nothing.. I am thinking that 16hp Duramax is going to be my best bet and just put a muffler and remove the governor on it

Have you looked for a whole sled? sometimes you can even part it out and break even. Could you post a link to your local craigslist? I tend to have good luck with finding things like this.

Well here are some potential ads.

$300 four wheeler that needs plugs, just bring two br9's and test the spark.

$200 400cc bike that needs some work, runs for a time then stops.

? Massive bike not practical, but who wouldn't want to put that on their kart.

? Guy has lots of dirt bike parts, may have/ know of a whole engine.

$300 Four wheeler with broken front drive gear. May be meaning the front wheels don't drive anymore.

Wow, there's almost nothing that would be useful on your local Craigslist. More motorcycles than anything, i expected at least one snowmobile, even in a southern state there is normally one person trying to get rid of their sled. Heck, I've even found one in Colorado. Sorry about that i pretty much struck out.

EDIT: I have to say that Kijiji.ca is so much easier on the eyes when trying to find stuff.

Ya i can see where you going. Personally i would go for the four wheeler and use most of the parts of of it and part out what i don't need.

bike engines are a fair bit harder to install

a 16hp duromax with a tc would be good as it mounts by four bolts and is easy to adjust
also the wireing is all self contained

id be wary of that top quad as if it has sat with no plugs it is likly full of crap and engine damage will result

the second bike is likly a simple fix probs due to over looking a basic maitanence issue

3rd one would make a good buggy

4th id hit him up first out of all the otions

5th could be a wreak or a simple fix
if they mean the front sprocket is brocken then easy but if 4x4 is broken i wouldnt touch it with a barge pole

I am going to go to my local Harbor Freight and get one of there 420cc Pederator motors. I have a 20% off coupon so i think that will be my best bet and i know it is new and returnable.

for a few bucks more you could get one of these.....................
http://www.carrollstream.com/16HP_Gas_Engine_With_Electric_Start_p/cs190es.htm

these are 420 cc LIFAN honda clones. ( gobs of torque) i have had mine for over 2 years ( with gov removed) and i have beat it mercilessly and never had a single problem with it ! the only "issue " i ever had was ....when hammering it on really ROUGH terrain....the float would bounce around and cause an intermittent ( but very short...maybe .5 sec) bog . i remedied that with a tillotson carb...and what a difference ! i would highly recommend trying one of these ! also...if you are not in a rush.....they sometimes have free shipping deals .

I have the predator 420cc which is supposedly rated around 13 HP, but varies since they all use the same displacement and different compression ratios and what not. I don't ride my kart much since it needs some upgrades because this engine has too much HP for a dead axle.

Anyway, I look at this engine like something that was designed to put out large amounts of torque w/o revving higher than it was intended to. (If I wanted something that revs fast and loud, I would've found some kind of 2 stroke). I kept the governor in tact and 38 mph with a 6:1 ratio is pretty good to me.

I highly recommend it. The only thing you'll notice is that this thing burns probably twice the fuel since its more than twice the displacement than a 6.5 Honda. Other than that, the electric start box is really cool. Especially when you lengthen the wires and connect it right under the driver's seat. Never again (as long as your battery is charged!) Will you have to get out and pull that rope to start your cart. Good luck on your purchase.

Edit: something that id like to add s that these engines are cheap for a reason. I haven't used a duromax engine, but for $229 or w/e it was, sounds sketchy. These are chinese-made and I can only imagine the quality of the parts is low. I would certainly go with the predator 420. 1. Who doesn't want their engine to say "420"? XD 2. This is a more popular brand since it's HF's. 3. I was shocked how much torque it gave me.
