I kinda want to keep this short and sweet, get my point out and go from there,

I would like to get into the karting world, I love to build stuff so I'd like to make my own kart. I would be on a very short budget but have time to play with it. I want a simple drift kart I just something fun to scoot around in and fun to tinker with as a hobby, I know it's a complicated thing to get into and that's why I want to learn. What tools, and stuff like that do I need to get into making my own Kart? I have a pretty basic understanding of engines, just not kart setups and how they work. Any advice is greatly appreciated, I am sorry if I'm leaving something out, thanks for reading.

Remember that building a kart from the ground up can get expensive fast. Your best bet financially is to search places like Craigslist for a cheaply priced kart that needs tlc and go from there.

It'll not only give you an understanding of how everything works, it also won't break your budget. Then when ready to move onto your own build you also have something to sell towards that cost.

Thanks for the advice bro I appreciate it! I think I'm gonna start off with just tinkering with an engine, looking at a 5.5hp Briggs and Stratton engine for 50 bucks.

What year is the engine? I've got a 1992 5hp B&S that I would be more than happy to get $50 out of. That's because I don't think I could.

you have any scrap yard's around you. i would start looking there for a few engines. i can pick up about 5 engines from my scrap yard for $50 and make at least 2 or 3 of them run. most of the time theres nothing wrong with the engines. 90% of the time just a good carb cleaning.

What kind of scrap yards generally carry that stuff?

Honestly if you want to get an engine and mod it get a predator. You can get hundreds of parts for them and the possibilities are endless. Billet rods, flywheels, ect ect. And if you really mess up the engine, a new one is just around the corner and would be happy to take the parts. Thats my idea anyways. People push some pretty rad numbers out of them too.

But wouldn't you want a good, reliable(ish) briggs and stratton. Lots of parts and it's made IN THE USA.

Well from my experience china stuff(in general) isn't very reliable. And don't you want to quality. And your supporting you country by buying stuff there instead of getting it from china?

Okay. Well. If you want to get into politics id be happy to give you a rundown. Now. Just because something is made in China doesn't mean it isn't reliable. Predators are extremely reliable. Now. You tell me how easily you find a replacement block for that Briggs when you're running high Rpms and blow it. Or a head for that matter when you score a cylinder head. Now. With the predator it's a diamond in the rough. They're great engines.

I said in general. I have no experience with predator engines but I have heard a lot of positive stuff about them. Most of my experience with China stuff is not very positive. But since you have owned some predators yourself. So I would take your advice for it since you are a senior member and probably know more than me.

With all the upgrade parts the engine really isn't the same after. You can push like i said previously some pretty impressive numbers. It's also a cheap building ground and if you want you can get a hemi version as well. It's where I would start and you don't have to worry about unknown problems with the engine. $100 no worries and it's done. Throw some money at it and upgrade it if you want and they become great power plants
