Alright i have a go kart with a 6hp tecumseh engine. i bought it from craigslist and it has a torque converter on it. First off, i would like to know what kind of torque converter it is so if i put up a pic, would anyone be able to identify it. And second, when you buy an engine, does it come with a clutch or torque converter already installed or do you have to install it yourself. I dont have a clutch and i want to keep my torque converter and possibly install it on a different engine so if i sell the engine do i have to include it?

yes someone on here could identify it with ease, post pics of it from the side and from the rear, also post a closeup pic of the side of the driver (the pully on the engine)

And second, when you buy an engine, does it come with a clutch or torque converter already installed or do you have to install it yourself.
The engine u have is called an industrial engine and it comes without a clutch just an industry standard sized shaft to fit what ever u want to it
some other types of engines come with clutches but thats a differant matter

I dont have a clutch and i want to keep my torque converter and possibly install it on a different engine
yes u do have a clutch
your torque converter works as a clutch and gearbox in one a a T/C is better than a centrifugal clutch, they are really the only two types or clutch for a gokart
as i said before your engine and your new engine have a set shaft size it is up to u to make sure u get the right size, its either 5/8 3/4 or 1 inch in diamiter
once u remove your T/C from the old engine u can measure the shaft

If i sell the engine do i have to include it?
No, as when u buy a new engine it is expected the engine has no clutch

What do you mean by "a closeup pic of the side of the driver"

And thanks alot for the other info, it helped me a ton! I am planning on getting a Harbor Freight 212cc predator engine, so im sure the TC will fit.

The torque converter consists of two parts, the drive an driven. The drive attaches to the shaft of the engine, the driven is most likely mounted on the jackshaft. The main thing is the output shaft of you current engine needs to be the same diameter as the new engine (1/2", 3/4"), and you torque converter being able to handle hp of your new engine. Also the belt on the torque converter is made for the drive an driven to operate at a specific distance from each other, so you will need to factor that in when upgrading the engine. It may not be a "just swap them out" the type deal, if the center to center distance of the torque converter setup changes, it will not operate properly.

Some CVT's (Torque Converters) like the Comet30 Tav2 are "self contained". As an assembly, the center distance is fixed, and can go from engine to engine without issue. The whole assembly simply bolts to the side cover of the engine.

Other units like the Comet 40 are separate units. The drive unit mounts to the engine's PTO shaft, while the driven unit mounts on a jackshaft, which is then bolted to the kart chassis. This type of unit requires special attention to maintain center distance (or a belt change to allow a different center distance) when mounting on a different machine.
