Small Tpwn Ford Tech
Hey guys. Just wanted to share where im at on my project. I laid out the wheels for reference as what it should look like kinda. Anyways. I got a free FC420V from my brother from an old lawnmower. Got the carb off amd soaking in gas. Float is free and seems to be working, but the throttle and choke were all sticky, but do move. Compression is good. This engine ran like a top when parked 10 years ago. So im just going to clean everything thouroughly and see if the starter can be saved. These had a serviceable starter which is nice!
Plan to take off the dual mower type pulley and run a single It will run a peerless 700 at 1:1, and the belt will be tension clutched. Im debating running either double row setup, or maybe a serpentine? Any thoughts on that are appreciated. Its a 14.5hp engine and very torquey. Belts are cheaper than a trans, but i dont want to be replacing them daily either. I know these dont really shift on the fly, but i can get 3 used 700s for the price of one new ragb, so i figured i would just make it so it will just take off in high gear without stalling. Then i can also let my son and wife drive it in lower gears. And finally the mower frame i cut up already has the spot for one, and for a tensioner clutch, so one less thing to fabricate.
It has a decent charging coil i believe, as it had incandescent headlights on the mower and you could run them all you wanted and still have a full battery. So i should be able to run quite a few LEDs.
It is a full pressure lubrication engine. The filter adapter has a plug on both the IN and OUT. So my plan is to run lines from these to a baldwin bypass filter followed by a small cooler mounted above the screen so the fan sucks air thru at all times. The bypass filter is just for good measure, and to provide enough of a restriction that most of the oil still goes thru the full flow filter. Ive been saving random partial quarts of full synthetic oil at work, because im a mechanic, everything from 0w20 to 20w50 and everything inbetween. I mix them all up and run in my OPEs. Its probably close to a 10w30 at the end of the day. Hasnt failed me yet, and its free!
Still need to build the steering. I refuse to run direct steering, i hate the twitchiness. Plan to make a rack and pinion setup so it feels more like driving a car. Maybe 1 full turn to lock in each direction. Debating some taller skinnier tires, well see how these act first as they were free.
It will have a bench seat and cage so i can give the kids rides and teach them how to drive it. Lots of work to do!
