Valve spring harmonic video

I found this really interesting. I didn't realize the valve springs didn't compress evenly, and the harmonics at high rpm are crazy. Neat stuff.

The way the valve spring rotates seem to explain why the retainer groove will mushroom if the valves are floated very much. I always thought it was from slack and slapping. Shows what I know I guess.

Do you think a second spring wound the opposite direction would help by giving counter rotational forces?

I was watching some valve float videos that had opposing coils and they seemed to do the same thing. Beehive style springs seem to be the best bet so far.

That's really cool. The way the fuel just floods in on the opening part of the valve is nuts, I guess it's from puddling on top of the valve? Very cool to actually see that in action, thank for posting that.

That is correct, after the intake valve closes there is enough time for the later part of the incoming air fuel mixture to slam against the back of the intake valve and puddle up so that you see the condensed fuel light off rich which would be a orange or yellow flame around the valve seat and valve face because condensed air fuel mixture leaks pass the valve seat and face due to the fact that this engines intake valve is not staying completely closed because if you look real closely at the cycle of the engine the intake valve is rotating in the seat while the valve should be closed letting some of this condensed mixture leak into the combustion chamber. One can also see that this engine has canted valves which unshroud during the opening away from the edge of the combustion chamber. You get it, not many people can look at at a video like this and see what is going on here.

I guess that would explain why Smokey's hot vapor engines ran so hard, no fuel to puddle.i can't see the oil burner video for some reason, when I quote it I see the URL and am trying to copy and paste it, but big fingers + small phone is making that difficult. I'll get it figured out though.
Since the valve is still rotating on the seat, that would mean it's either at, or right at valve float?

Alcohol = liquid compression, plus it's an oxygen bearing fuel which is why it'll still run even being so rich. I should send that guy some nitro to put in it.

I would say that the rotating intake valve is the result of harmonics in this engine as with many engines. Good ole Smokey Yunick was the only person that I know of who was able to achieve an air fuel mixture in a homogeneous state. That man was a genius and along with Zora Arkus Duntov back in the day! I once owned one of Smokey's SY1 "Smokey Rams" that I ran on a 56 210 Del Ray when I was a kid, loved it!

I know he was ahead in his time. He schooled many in his time and paved the way for the people that learned from him to advance their knowledge.

Smokey is my #1 hero. One of my favorite things was how the big three told him they'd figure out the hot vapor themselves rather than buy his patent, so he took the secrets of that one to his grave. He wasn't all clean and polished, but he knew what the h3ll he was taking about.
