V 2.0 is under way. WTF was I thinkin?

I began working on buggy 2.0 cuz I needed another project. Like I don't have enough already. I'll post up the progress as I go, cuz everyone needs a good laugh every now and again. I welcome suggestions and other ideas on how to do things better so bring it on. You old experienced guys won't get much out of this, but maybe the youngns will gain some knowledge and inspiration, hopefully.
I don't profess that my way is the only way, best way or even a good way, its just the hack way.
This will be a copy of V1.0 with improvements and things I wish I had done differently.
So without further BS here is phase 1
Laying out the chassis base frame.

Frame rails:
Bent in 2 places @ 12 deg



After bending the ends have to be cut at 50 deg.
It will be obvious later.



Laid out the base components:




2 more cross pieces need to be notched or fish mouthed as some say.



Tubing notcher:


A proper joint should look something like this:




4 cross pieces cut, 2 notched, 2 cut @ 50 deg
Then measure diagonal to square it up.



Now to get off the floor.

I think l’ve tasted it all: grinding grit, sparks, sanding dust, welding fumes, toxic chemicals, blood, metal of all descriptions, broken grinding wheels, broken drill bits, even a mouth full of cat fur, when he got scared and landed in my face.
That was just in the shop. Yet l keep trying for something new!

Not much chance you be learnin anything from me! Jus sayn…

the only thing this version will share with V1 is the basic desigh.
it will be 10 inches longer and 5 inches wider. Different components, more HP.

l don’t think to stop and take pics. I’m cautious about getting too basic as well.
Don’t want to get boring.

this will be a long term project. V1 caused serious burn out. l spent way too many hours on a daily basis, trying to get it done. Now V2 can be more leisurely.
At some point l’ll sell V1 to finance V2, if 2 gets too crazy.

Only had a little time today. Welded up the frame and added a few dual purpose gussets.
The main purpose of the plates is for the floor pan to bolt to. The fact that they improve shear strength of the joints is just a bonus.

It has lots of good info on "the proper way ta do things"

I don't follow it "religiously"
...but, it's a great reference guide

I have to be doing something. I can't just sit and vegetate. The dark dreary days of winter are coming and that's when I'll be happy to have another project, till then it will be slow going.
I doubt very many will find this interesting for very long.

You might notice I try to avoid close up pics, unless I get lucky and something actually comes out right.

Here is an interesting tidbit for ya.
Referring to tubing wall thickness you will often here the word nominal thrown in there.
While the OD of there is pretty consistant (within .005) the wall thickness is not.
Now obviously these came from two different lots and maybe even different manufacturers.

currently my favorite book is “The book of ingenious devices” published in 850.
some really cool ideas in there. Never looked to see if its online. Purdy sure 850 was a lot of years before Al Gore invented theinternet.
