Using Dies for left handed threads

Hey fellas,

I am working on the yerf dog I scored and instead of purchasing a tie rod to replace a bent one, I got the to DIY... Well I had some 3/8" steel rod in the garage and used my die to thread the right handed thread - No problems.

I thought I could just flip the die over and use it that way to thread the rod, but not working.

or

Do I just use the same die and start turning to the left?

or

Is there a special die?

Just searched ebay and there is a left handed die for threading...

special die I'm afraid..

turned over it's just a right handed thread anyways
(just like a threaded rod or nut threads the same either end)

and turning CCW will only "back out" just as a nut would.

BUT: you can make a short life die your own, with a left handed nut of the correct size (stainless prefered), just juse a hacksaw and cut four equally spaced rather deep grooves in the thread (chip release)

might be cheaper than to find a left handed die.. and it works reasonable on mild steel rods (as long as we talk about small sizes here)
just give the rod a nice tapered end, and back off even more often than usual and add cutting fluid ...

clean the thread with a second nut and some valve seating compound or such (abrasive paste of any kind)

Thanks... Considering then tie rods are about same cost as a tie I might as well by the tie rod.
Oh well.

For the record; why do people post up with questions I might actually be able to answer after I've gone to bed?!?!?!? I have to be up at 4AM, which means a bed time around ~8 to 9 PM (must be the price I pay for living in the Eastern Time Zone.......)

It's kind of hard to help when everyone else seems to operate on Pacific time.....
