Hello all, I am building a basic low cost go kart centered around a briggs 1150 that I got for 20$. I had an Idea to make a belt clutch using a spring loaded tensioner that could be controlled by the foot. Do you guys think this could work before I drop the money?

It will work if you set it up right, but the easiest solution would be a centrifugal clutch.

I can't tell what you're capable of *shrugs*

But of course a belt clutch could work.
(tractor mowers use belt clutches afaik)

It works, my first gokart used a belt tensioner clutch and it was awesome.

Just make sure you tension the side of the belt which is slack under acceleration, otherwise you'll need 50x the spring tension.
