Alright, I am wanting to see if I can add a lawn tractor rear end to a cart so that it has gears and shifter. This way I can use it for other things as well. I have a old cub in parts and it has a parfect set up for the shifter that I can easily adapt for a cart. I can easily turn the rear end 90' so that it becomes a horizontal shaft instead of a verticle. Can also easily take off the pully and add a smaller one or a gear. Question is, it is too narrow. I have seen where some have done this, but no further info. Has any one done this? How would you widen it? The axles are known for being week. My thought is to take the rear end apart, cut the shafts short and weld on new steel shafts out of a old cub, giving me stronger shafts on the out side and 5 lug hubs for the bigger tires. Haveing the lionger axles, I could honestly mount the to the frame with a bearing ( dont know what they are called. Bolt onto frame solid, while allowing thew live axle to turn freely). Any thoughts, concerns or tips? Thanks.
