Ok so what all should I check before sinking some money into this project. I think I have the potential to build a pretty cool off road kart! I can send detailed pics to anyone that wants to take a better look at things. I will be getting the briggs and stratton 8hp engine tonight, so Ill know what kind of clutch Ill be needing. I want to be able to run these 22" tires in the back. With that in mind should I be in the market for a torque converter?

So I'm needing a clutch for my 8th Briggs and stratton, should I just buy a torque converter instead of buying a clutch?

It's an 8HP Tecumseh? So it probably has a 1" PTO? You can get an authentic Comet, but it will most likely be used. Although, there is nothing wrong with an older and/or used TC as Comet made them right and they're relatively simple. GTC makes clones of them, claims they can handle higher HP than Comet, they can't, and they've received mixed reviews. To get a real Comet TC, check Ebay, but be careful and confirm with us. Also, you can get one from your local Craigslist if you can get someone to part out a kart. Check the FS/FT section as I think someone on here is trying to trade one.

If you get a 30 series, it will be cake to assemble. It will have a backplate that bolts to the motor's face. This backplate has a jack shaft which has a small sprocket and the driven half of the TC. The driver slides onto the PTO and a bolt secures it.

I thought it was Tec. and knew that MOST, not all, 8HP Tecs. usually have a 1" PTO. 8HP is usually the max power they'll put a 3/4" PTO on and the least they'll put a 1" PTO on, so we'll just have to wait and see.
