I've been thinking about doing a little writing. Being a story based on local urban legend- it got me to thinking about another one I grew up with. If you Google up "Donkey Woman in San Antonio"- you can get the basic idea. She wasn't in SA. She was known as the "Helotes Donkey Woman" and the stories surrounding her always involved chasing cars and terrorizing the victims.

Closer to home was the "Lake Worth Monster". While both have a small semblance to reality- the donkey lady actually exsisted. The Lake Worth Monster only did if you count inner tubes.... The truth surrounding that story is a worthy documentary in itself. ......

So- what you may not be able to Google up about the Lake Worth Monster:

Some many years after it's inception, 2 men came forward with confessions on how and why the Lake Worth Monster was created. Lake Worth was created and managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The land belonged to the city of Ft.Worth. It was created by damming up the Trinity river to prevent a repeat of the catastrophic flood of downtown Ft.Worth. Generally speaking- the flood was in the 30's and the dam built in the 40's- but I'm shooting from the hip and a shaky memory here-soooooooo...

Anyway- almost no Corps lakes have any development on them other than Corps owned and controlled parks and boat ramps and maybe one or two privately owned marinas. Lake Worth was one of the exceptions as much of the shoreline was developed with lakefront homes. You couldn't own the land however, instead you leased it from Ft. Worth for 99years. You could also build docks.

So here comes the problem. Two ladies decided to fish off a dock. Now technically- this is a public dock.....built on a publicly built and funded reservoir on city land. So the owner could not legally press trespass charges or prevent them from fishing his dock. So he and a friend concocted a scheme to drive them away..

They took a few semi-inflated truck tire tubes and used rope to make a sorta of Lochness looking creature. They anchored a pulley to a cement block 40 yards off the end of the dock and had the other end of the rope under the dock out of view. When the ladies showed up the next day, all they had to do was give the rope some slack......a few jerks and IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!

A great success- the ladies beat a hasty retreat. Now is where it all goes terribly wrong. The next day, the women are back with company. They have told their story and are just hoping for a second siting with witnesses. Now here's where a little forethought and self-control would have been very helpful- BUT- the two couldn't help themselves and the Lake Worth Monster appears again.

Before they knew it- hordes of people were showing up each day to catch a glimpse of the monster. They were having so much fun that it took a while to sink in that they had indeed created a monster. Instead of 2 little old ladies they now had been overrun.

One day a drunk showed up with a shotgun. The pair say the opportunity to put an end to the whole affair and gladly obliged to make the monster appear for slaughter. Unfortunately, the knight in shining shotgun was so drunk and inept that it almost didn't happen, but he eventually slew the great monster.

That solved the two good ol' boys problem- eventually no-one came around anymore looking for the Lake Worth Monster. But far from dead, the seed was planted and a ledgend for decades to come was BORN.

How it morphed into a half-goat, half- man tire chuncking island dwelling beast is anybody's guess. I've fished that lake for 30 years and at this moment, I couldn't tell you wether "goat island" and "Greer Island" are the same or not. But I can tell you there are no goats on goat island or any "Lake Worth Monster"... Of course there is a very logical explanation- the monster ate all the goats and moved on.......So if you're ever camping out and see a car tire flying 500 feet over your tent.........

There is very few urban legends round these parts

Mostly because all country kids don't believe it till they see it

U hear if a haunted house or somthing
" bull crap gets go check it out "

There's a few spooky dreamtime story's
dreamtime is the story of the aboriginal people they use them
To pass on everything from food sources to warnings to dances
And being as a tribe can still walk though a part of the desert they haven't been in for 30 years and still get to the same watering hole they clearly work
And yes there's still a few tribes left roaming the desserts living in a traditional way

Theres one much like the one above that rings with Romeo and Juliet
Or a couple from different tribes
Basically they broke a set of rules
The spirits were pissed
They broke an island in 1/2 and put them on each pece so they could see each other but never be together
There's a constant rift between the two islands that u must never pass nere by

The whole point of it is there's a huge arcipelago of a few hundred large islands in the local bay

The in and out going tide causes havoc as it rushes around the islands causing unpredictable un mappable currents

Most of the islands and volcanic granite
But this one had large limestone faults in it

It has eroded away in the middle leavening 100m gap that has a reef in the middle that's very rife with salmon
So as the tide changes a there's almost a rapid running thur there
If you get close with a boat your finished
Let alone if u were trying to get the easy to catch fish in your dug out canoe

There once was a super phosphate ship that thought it could take a short cut

It was wreaked on the reef on the end of the island

That was a rubbish version of the story but the only way to get the real thing is to talk with the local elders as they hold all those story's

Fowler- Your mention of the Aborigines reminded me of one of my favourite movies- "Quigley- Down Under". It's also almost the only thing Tom Selleck did I really cared for. Thank God he wasn't wearing "Thomas Magnum's" shorts in that one.:2guns:

The most prominent "story" that comes to my mind is that of the three sisters, a rock formation in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney.

For many years the tale was believed to be a legend from the Aboriginal dreamtime but has since been proved to have started around the 1920s

One of my favorites "Marys Grave" http://www.weirdus.com/states/new_york/cemetery_safari/marys_grave/index.php

Not really urban legend but maybe, http://www.amityvillehorror.com
And when the original amityville horror came out many many years ago after the movie let out most people drove by to see the house. The house had lights turning on and off at random, one window that was broken in the movie actually had a new sticker on it as if replaced. Being the drunk teenagers that we were i stupidly went and knocked on door.
Needless to say i was escorted away.
