Hi all
I ordered/bought an EX27 and now would prefer an EX21. Ahh yes, buyers remorse. Well, it's no big deal because I'll either find a use for the EX27 or sell it.

Here's the question:
I currently have an EX17 and Comet series 30 asymmetric TC on my Manco kart. If I get my hands on an EX21, can I literally bolt it up with no mods to anything? I assume the TC is fine with the EX21, but what about bolt placement, other issues, etc.?

Thanks for your help!!

Should be all fine, depending if you have room or not.
Not a huge upgrade though, only a hp or so.

The ones gokartsupply.com is selling are labeled as "G4" torque converters, not comet. most likely they are GTC industries' 40 series copy. no one has tried the 40 series clone yet, but their 30 series clutches seem to work ok up to a max of about 8hp.

and just as a warning the GTC TC2 will NOT work on the EX27. for an EX27 you will want a comet 40, or maybe a GTC 40.

the EX17 and the EX21 are about the same outer dimensions, i believe both use the some bolt patterns and crank shafts. so the EX21 should bolt right up. Here is the measurements for both so you can make sure:

you will gain 1.3HP stock from the EX17 to the EX21. also, IIRC, the EX21 is apparently best for modifying.

P.S. i sure do wish i had an EX27!

Hmm. You know, I wonder if I'm going to get the EX27 bug when it arrives. The reason I was leaning back toward the EX21 is that the kart is supposed to be for the kids! (Yes, that is what I told my wife):devil2:

I figured a little more horsepower but not so much to make it a beast would be a good compromise -- not as dangerous as the
EX27 might make it, but a little more horsepower for me.

Perhaps I should find a kart in need of an engine and leave this one as is...

Yeah your right.
That deceptive advertising, it says Comet at the top of the page but G4 next to the converter.

if you do use the EX27 and a 40 series you can limit the throttle and/or change the gearing. that way the kids can't go too fast, but you can pop a lever and shoot down the street. kids could grow into the larger engine, that way you don't need to upgrade again. you can also get some money towards a 40 series by selling the 30 series.

of course the EX21 would be an easy switch, likely a matter of only a few bolts. it would also probably end up being cheeper than an EX27 and a new 40 series setup. but, the EX21 wouldn't be nearly as much of a gain in power as the EX27 (which you have already bought).

if you have enough time and money, a second kart wouldn't be a bad idea.

Yeah your right.

:iagree:

does it matter? there not original comets, but pretty much the same thing.

it may very well not matter, i mean its not like everything that comes from china is a POS, and GTC claims to be made in the USA (and, just because its made in the USA doesn't necessarily mean its super quality).

I have the GTC TC2 (AKA, comet 30 series/ TAV2 clone), and a few other members do too. the only problems we have found:

-Not 100% sure its entirely made in the USA, but if it works, it works. They do have this weird logo on all their pages, looks chines.... http://gtcmanufacturing.com/images/JIIlogo1.jpg

-The system seems to get very hot. I can't hold onto the sheaves of the driven after a decent drive because they are too hot! not sure if comet TAV2 is the same, would be interested to know (hint, hint..).

-The company claims that the system can handle up to 13HP engines, a member named metalthrashingman has had a lot of difficulty just running 9HP through the system (the comet TAV2 was only rated to 8HP...).

All that said, I have had no problems running my GTC TC2 for a decent amount of hours, going through many gallons of gas. well... i have had one problem, but that was my fault :D

I have no experience with the comet system, but judging from all the reviews, if you can get a comet, get a comet. If not GTC wouldn't be the worst option.
