I have a tecumseh 5hp that may have once been in an ariens rototiller since it has an ariens sticker on it. But what I'm wanting to know Is what model number engine it is? Is there a number cast into it somewhere? I would like to know what engine it is so I can buy a rebuild kit for it. Or are all tecumseh 5hp engines the same?

it should be stamped on the engine someplace. look it over a couple times and see if you can find it...usually over the flywheel of the blower housing

tec's are known for the blower housing, right near the bottom on the "front" of the engine. if not it may be on a tag on the snowblower somewhere

Yea I looked over it last night when I first started tearing it apart, but didn't find anything other than under the head. And the blower housing? I'm drawing a blank on what that is, haven't worked on a small engine in some years. Thanks fellas.

the blower housing is the piece of metal that the pull cord shroud bolts to. If you take off the blower housing you will be able to see the actual flywheel and magneto.

Ok I got the blower off and there was a set of numbers. Inside a circle there was a 13 under that was a '1A1 0368', outside and above the circle was an 'A'. Does anyone know what this means or where i can look it up or part for it?

Or maybe it was lAl 0368

I don't think those are the numbers you're looking for. The numbers should be right on the shroud. CLean it up well and look closely. Might be obscured by dirt, paint, rust, etc. Failing all else, post up some pics and we'll see what we can do.

Are you sure it's 5hp? I recently tore apart a Tec H40 and an H60 at the same time. Except for bore and stroke, they were identical. I used a bunch of parts off the H40 to fix the H60.

For an example, here's the numbers off the H40- H40-550746. This was on a metal tag riveted to the shroud. Perhaps yours is missing. On the other hand, my H60 came off a Sears application, o it used a different numbering system. Stamped right into the shroud is 143-616192

Yea there's only 2 stickers on the engine, no metal tags. One sticker gives the weight of oil to use and has some warnings on it, the other just says ariens 5hp. Ok I'll clean up the shroud some and post some pics, hopefully we can identify it. I'd rather rebuild it than go buy one from harbor freight.

Edit: I hate myself, I tore apart almost the entire engine and the numbers were on the pull side of the engine shroud. I'm an idiot, but it's an H50 and now I can find some partaking for it. Thank you toystory.

Good- Glad you got the mystery solved. Does that one have the adjustable main jet carb? I love that carb! (Look for a thumbscrew sticking straight down, out the bottom of the float bowl).

Because of the range of adjustability. You do not have to solder and/or redrill and/or replace the jet for fine tuning the carb. Furthermore, many of them have adjustable pilots and other such tuning goodies.

They do have a bit of a reputation for being prone to gumming up and getting b!tchy when fuel is left in them for extended periods. I do not have any problems with this, I always store my engines with the carb empty- never a problem.

Oh ok, and yes it does have the adjustable pilot. And the carb was dry thankfully and all the ports were clear of debris when i sprayed carb cleaner through them. Now its time to find some parts.
