Yes I know there have been quite a few threads on this subject; I have searched around and people mainly just throw out ideas and I never see any real help.

I want to know who has the quietest exhaust setup: be it custom made, home-made, store bought, or whatever. I think it would be nice to have a definitive answer to the best and quietest muffler setup because I know a lot of us want to run our karts in a residential area.

I have found these from simply searching the internet:
Stock - pretty loud to me...

This one is threaded on both sides for the possibility of adding a second muffler lol

I am very much considering trying this:
http://scooter.wikia.com/wiki/Building_a_can_in_can_muffler

It's made from a soda can. It seems easy to make and it looks like it would work well.

I have also heard that using a piece of threaded galvanized pipe simply connected to a drained acetone can worked wonders for someone's 11hp B&S (which is what I have.)
I don't think attaching an old car muffler is really an option I think it's too big and would really just look terrible, depending on what kind of kart you have.

I'd like to see pics and videos of what everyone has, and any new ideas for DIYs. I think it'd be cool to have a super quiet go kart if it's even possible. -rollin prius style? :auto: :sifone:

I have an 80's or older B&S that was missing lots of stock parts and the exhaust was fitted by the previous owner. I know Honda's are famously quiet engines stock but I need to make my engine quieter since I don't have the option of buying one new.

I think the key to silence is much like how a gun silencer works. The more you slow down the air and allow it to dissipate, the quieter it is. I think baffles are really important but they can't inhibit flow too much.

stealth quiet

The stock honda type exhaust is works well. I have one of those mufflers that I cut off the flange to use on another pipe - I will post a pic tomorrow - if you want it pay the postage and it yours.
I used the flange to build a straight pipe for my sons minibike - he had a close encounter with the PoPo so I decided it was time to go to the stealth mode.

My clone muffler is very quiet. Under full throttle, I can hardly hear it when I'm in my backyard and the kart is up front. To put this into perspective, I live on 1/4 acre. I think that the GX series exhausts are very quite, even though they may not sound it while riding the kart.

@Walter
Yeah post pics and I'll let you know if I'm interested. I'd love to see it.

If not I'm probably going to try the coke can exhaust and post a vid when I'm done. Issue is the exhaust I have on right now is insanely rusted and I may have an issue when removing it, so we'll see I'm hoping for the best lol

I wouldnt necessarily rule out all 'car mufflers'...

Some OEM type automotive mufflers made for sub-compacts are fairly-small/inexpensive and they'd be extremely quiet on a kart engine.

_________

A motorcycle wrecking yard could be a good source for an inexpensive/quiet and very cool-looking muffler too:

________

A Supertrapp muffler can be adjusted to be very quiet or a completely open header by adding/removing these diffuser disks. I was thinking this might be a cool design feature for a DIY muffler...

________

I'd like to see pics and videos of what everyone has,

I run these RLV race mufflers on my karts, they're not ultra quiet but there pretty quiet and have a cool deep throaty sound. They're also about the only muffler approved for use on 4-cycle engines at racekart tracks. They've just got a series of 2 more screens inside (spaced a couple inches apart) like the rear one you see in the pic here:

When used along with a tuned 3-stage header, they've actually been known to increase H/P and torque over no muffler at all.

I've got the same RLV model muffler on my other kart:

Wow that muffler is pretty small. I've just tried removing my muffle and it won't budge. Nothing short of cutting the straight pipe and trying something drastic. I may just keep it the same.

Anderkart- you've GOT to tell me about that sweet F100- Pm or Off Topic...
Sorry for the jack, folks.

On topic, I've heard they make or made Supertrapps for motorcycles. Maybe look for one of those? I have always loved the Supertrapp sound.

I can't get mine off, so it's not much of an option. This thread is now a very good resource for me and others for future builds though
