A keyway is a slot that's cut into a shaft or inside the bore of something like a sprocket so that the two can spin together without slipping when a "key" is in between both. The shaft and the gear/sprocket/hub/whatever it is both need to have a keyway if you want it to be secure. I hope this makes sense.

yea it confirms what i reckon it was, i dont understand how a real axle is held in so that it cant move side to side? the bearings hold it to spin but what stops the axle from moving side to side?

you use locking collars. Its a collar that fits over the shaft with a setscrew that you tighten on the shaft so it dosnt move.

where do you put the locking collars? wouldnt they brush against the metal next to it?

On my go kart the bearings have an eccentric ring that sticks out (connected to the internal part that spins) with a matching locking collart that fits over it. They spin together so theres no friction between the locking collar and the bearing.

EDIT: btw the axle wont move arond (side to side) easily when its through the bearings. I had to use a rubber mallet to move it. Locking collars are just a safety precaution so if the axle gets bumped hard while your drive it dosnt offset the chain/brakes and screw everything up.
