Grizz - The transmission set up will be sprocket on the reduction gearbox linked via chain onto another sprocket on the solid rear axle. I haven't considered a method of mounting the engine yet, but from what I understand I need some method of tensioning the chain by adjusting the engine mount. I'll be watching your build closely for ideas.

Theo - There is plenty of width around the knee area, however where the frame tapers in at the front it becomes quite tight. If I were to build this part again I would widen this area by 2" and adjust the angles to maintain the same overall width.

Wobbly, is there any vertical and diagonal tubing between the floor and the upper tube?

Theo, only what you can see in my pics. The frame is very strong, I don't think it needs any more bracing. The rear sub frame, in my opinion, does need additional bracing for an engine over 10hp.

Wobbly, I see you don't have your shocks tabs mounted on the frame yet. That's good. Part #MF2.5-90 page 23 is too short. Should be at least 4 inches in order for shock tabs to line up in a straight line. Take a look at my thread and you will what I mean in the pictures. My shock tabs are offset, causing the shocks to angle into the center. Theo says this is no good. :mad2: I'll have to cut these off and extend them by 1 1/2 inches at least. Will probably run a support up to the side frame to brace the shock tab as well.

I saw the pics Grizz, it dosen't look good. I left those stubby arms off the seat back because I wasn't sure how it was all going to line up, I was going to sort it out once the rear sub frame was mocked up. It had occured to me that those little arms are going to take a fair bit of force and would need additional bracing. The Arachnid, or the Ah-crap-nid as I like to call, it strikes again!

It sounds best if you pronounce it "Ohhh crap! Nid!" as you uncover another design flaw :)

I already have bought 4 shocks, they are 13" in length, probably too long for the front but should be ok for the rears. It would be possible to add a riser block onto the rear subframe and attach the top of the shocks to the upper side tube as you suggest. Good idea Theo

EDIT - Just thought, the upper side tube may not be wide enough, Grizz should be able to confirm though.

I already have my shocks as well, but they are CHEAP Chinese mechanical shocks, I will be upgrading once I get this chassis rolling.

Have to add a small extension to the upper rail in order to have the tab at the back or attach a tab under the rail about 4 inches in and it would line up in a straight line, but the angle would increase significantly.

Nice shocks on that site Theo. I was looking around here for a set of 12" harley shocks that someone might have replaced with a set of progressives that I could pick up on the cheap, but none yet

Nice one Bill :)

I got a bit carried away today and ordered some parts for the steering setup. It took 2 days and a post on another forum to find a UJ suitable for my new rack, it seems that a 5/8" UJ is un-available in the UK but luckily a hot rod builder came through for me. Not cheap at nearly £50 though :worried2: It does have the correct 5/8" 35 spline one side and a 3/4" DD bore the other which will save me loads of work.

I also tracked down a quick release steering boss that is designed for a 3/4" steering shaft, simply weld the small union onto the shaft and the boss locks onto that. Very neat and a good price at £20. Which leads on nicely to a question for you chaps - Can I use standard 3/4 solid mild steel round bar for the steering column?

The hub is very similar to the $18 one it that link. I thought it would make clambering in and out of the buggy a little easier, plus it offers a little bit of security to prevent unauthorised trips in my absence.

The first one looks great, it has the same clutch as mine and the price is about right. I think the second would be too big for the Ah-crap-nid, if you want to go that big then you may as well go for a motorbike engine and gearbox.

There are a lot of GX390 clones on the market, and lots of spares too. THIS is a good website with lots of tune up accessories and some nice written guides. I'm running my GX390 as stock for a little while, then I'll fit an advanced timing key and maybe remove the regulator, plus replace the intake filter with one of THESE and fit a better exhaust.

Made a small amount of progress today. The quick release steering boss turned up and I am very pleased with it. Started work on the wishbones but there are a few issues. The main problem is the width of my front suspension block, which is considerably wider than the plans call for. I'm stuck with it now so I have to work around it. I'm trying to keep the front wheels the same width/slightly narrower than the rears, which means I have to reduce the length of the wishbones. I've calculated that they need to be approx 10" long, which is around 4" shorter than the plans call for. So a quick question for you, do you think 10" is too short for the wishbone?
