Yes we are currently set to use diesel as a source, but given that using a gas engine with an lpg conversion would be significantly cheaper, we are leaning towards that route. It's actually not too late to change our proposal to the school

Right- which brings us back to my query about how a diesel could possibly be a suitable candidate for LPG/CNG/Meth conversion. I just can't see it.

Okay. Guess we suffered a communication failure. I think I just landed on your page. You're saying that INSTEAD of running a diesel on veg oil, you're going to run a gasoline engine on LPG. Check.

Myself? Not much. Here's what I know- I have seen propane powered generators for sale locally, based on GX-series engines. The technology for a bolt-on swap exists.

Click on "Honda" and away you go! (Unless you're using something other). Please note in case you're not yet aware- Most chinese knock-off or "clone" engines are Honda GX-based.

Would a Honda GX engine be the best choice for this project? Given that we are planning on selling this vehicle and donating the proceeds to charity, we hope to have an engine that has a good resale value.

Also, with a gas engine, will we need a clutch? (Please excuse these "noob" questions..) or will we need a torque converter?

Honda GX's have excellent resale values. A favoured engine to be sure. You will need a clutch. A CVT would be required if you were using fairly large tires or planning od driving on hills or offroad.

As for the honda engines, what would be the best way to acquire one? Online or craigslist? We honestly do not know where to start in terms of acquiring the engine. Because we don't plan on racing or anything, we don't want to spend a fortune.
Also, could we reduce noise with a muffler on these engines?

The engines come from the factory with a muffler. You can play around with other mufflers to get it quieter. To keep costs in check, you'll probably want to source a used engine. Maybe try your local Craigslist before going to Ebay. Don't overlook complete implements. These engines came on compressers, power washers, pumps, tampers, mixers- all kinds of stuff. Be wary of generators though. They use a tapered PTO shaft that is not conducive to mounting a clutch.

The alternate option is to buy a "clone". Get a coupon, and you can have a Predator from Harbour Freight for under $100. They are basically a Honda GX200, so the Propane parts will work. Other clones are available from varying places, all for a lot cheaper than even a used Honda. Obviously, the Honda is superior- but the clone will get the job done for 1/2- 1/4 of the cost.
