I take that back. The least amount of teeth I can find on a 3/4" bore sprocket is 10. At worst case scenario... if I can't fit a bigger sprocket on the axle between the frame, I'll have to have a 9t bored out to 3/4" . Thanks for the good ideas!

Yeah the boxes are at least clones, that logo on the box is the same logo that is on the GTC clutches, but it's not the GTC logo.... suspicious....

Great looking build guys. I have been debating building that machine for the past few weeks. I finally bought a mig welder recently and have been dying for a project. Keep up the good work guys! I have a Briggs 18hp twin with a true comet 40 tc set up that I could use.

Are you going to fabricate the A-arms completely or buy components such as the steering spindles and bushings?

Hey Ryan,

Thanks... yeah, they are finally looking like actual go-karts! Like anything though... they have become truly modified from the original plans. Henry and I have probably followed 50% of the plans, and have modified the other 50%. I made sure that I extensively read through all the other Arachnid builder's forum posts to discover problems. It was only because of these forums that we were able to easily accomplish hard tasks that the plans called for.

You asked about A-arms: the hardest part of the karts so far. In my previous posts, I mentioned that we have to make 16 pieces of 1" X 1" Steel for the arms. We tried to cut them out by-hand with a reciprocating saw (68 degree angle is bigger than our 45 degree chop-saw) but that did NOT produce good enough A-arms. I am going to a machine shop today to pick up the 16 pieces that we will weld together to make our A-arms... Also, as you can see from the photos above, yes, we are buying our spindles pre-made.

Your 18hp Vtwin with a 40s TC sounds awesome! If you are serious about building an "Arachnid", and buy those plans, I could Email you some of the major changes we made to the plans. It's a fun-looking machine so far!

I'll definitely let you know if/when I start my project. I would end up modifying my project as well. I've read the other build threads and can see the issues some of the builders have had. I'm sorry I missed the picture of the spindle, those look just like the ones I bought from BMIKarts for my last project.

I had a few questions:
1. what thickness 1x1 tubing did you go with? What was the price in your area of the steel?

2. When you get a few hours on the motors, I'm curious to know how they perform and will last. If I don't use my briggs twin, its on another project right now, I was thinking of the same motor. I have a harbor freight 20 mins from my house, and with the coupon I could probably get that motor for under $250

Keep up the good work.

We used #14 gauge 1"x1" square steel and #14 gauge 1.25"x1.25" from McNelius Steel in Dodge Center, MN. I drove there to get the steel. We DOUBLED the order given to us for 1 Arachnid. I purchased the steel in the longest pieces I could by (24 foot sections) The total for the steel was $212.00. I DID however have to go back to buy more, after we realized that we wanted longer karts. (and after a few mess-ups:oops:)

Once we put a load on those engines for a few months this summer, I'm sure we'll be able to see if they are good enough for what we have going. If there are any major problems, I will post them up on this thread. Your V-Twin may work OK if you do what we did: add at least 10" to the length of the back of the kart.

Good luck my friend!!! As usual... the project is quite the "can of worms" once you get going... but you'll love it!!!

Transmission Mounting Pics

So, getting everything lined up was harder and more painstaking than I thought... but one transmission is mounted!!

Update for April!!

We really got the fever now!!!
Henry and I work all week and try to give one day per weekend to working on them... so it feels like we never have enough time!!

The A-Arm cuts (16qty.) at the Machine Shop were expensive in the end... $123.50 for 1.9hrs of shop-labor... crap:furious2:.

Belts were purchased for 50 bucks apiece:rolleyes3:, and all the heim joints and rod-ends are on their way.

The "bushings" called for in the plans are not common and I'm biting my nails in anticipation for the cost from the machine shop... they are: 2.5" length, 1"O.D. 5/8" I.D. and allow the A-arms (which are finished) to pivot on the steering block.

Hopefully tomorrow we get some chain, and get these axles spinning!

Man this looks like a lot of fun! I am building a cart called the Trantula so i thought we might have gotten ours from the same website haha.

But i acually have a question for you guys. On the bottom picture you have in the pictures right above this post, what is that thing that is connected to the driven gear on the torque converter? Its also on the right in picture 2/10. Ive never seen one of those before ...

EDIT: Acually... That looks almost exactly what the cart i am building looks like! With the coffin frame and the dual parts to the frame. From what youve got here, i cant wait to get mine done! Haha
