Turning an engine off

Hi all. So I have finally got to the stage of organizing an engine. I have decided to go with something like this: http://m.ebay.com.au/Pages/ViewItem.aspx?aid=260731366274&sv=Horizontal shaft&emvcc=0

The only thing I'm not sure about is how to actually turn off the engine when I'm finished driving. I've read about kill switches but I was wondering if engines all come with some way of stopping them. For example could I just turn the throttle down really low and have it turn off like with a pushmower? Or does the engine I linked already have an off switch of some description? I don't have much experience with engines so wondering if there is a simple solution. Thanks !!

We'd need to know exact model type to determine its method of shutting down, but since I see it was off a pump, chances are is you will have a small copper wire coming off the coil that needs to be grounded to the motor/go-kart frame to kill the motor.

What you could do here, is extend that wire up to a switch near the steering-wheel, connect it on one side, and on the other, have another wire that goes to the frame/motor as a ground.

When flipped, this will shut your engine off.

Most engines will stop by cutting the power to the coil. Can be done by either braking the circuit or grounding it. (I suspect that engine will be the same.)

The only problem with using the low idle is that if you are going to use the engine on a kart, you wont be able to idle, making starting a PITA.

as rusty dog said, all you have to do is ground it. as in you connect a wire to the top of the sparkplug, and a wire to the engine block, and to cut the engine you connect the two.

ok great, I've just ordered the engine.. what is the coil though? is that the spark plug? (just so i konw where to look for the wire). And if there is no wire there, i can just connect one to the spark plug, and then to the frame and it will turn off?

there should be a green an a red wire the green is the kill switch an the red is the power from the motor.

That engine in your link is most likely a 6.5hp. clone/copy of the Honda GX200 engine model. These clone engines all come with a factory installed kill switch mounted right on the engine.

I'd suggest you also wire in a secondary kill switch located up near your karts steering wheel for convenience and added safety of having dual kill switches always within reach...

I also install a Zip-tie around my go karts spark plug wire that would be a 3rd option to quickly grab and pull the wire off the plug, just in case the engine revved to full throttle and the kart tried to run-away from you while starting. You can see my Zip-tie in my pic below:

(i used a long zip-tie with a section of fuel line and 2nd tie to
form a loop that would be much easier to quickly grasp in an emergency)
