I'm planning to go pick up steel for my go kart for bracing. My mom thinks I need to ask a welder because last time with no research I bought galvinized conduit. I know I need tubing and I was thinking 10 or 11 gauge but she dosent believe me because she dosent want me to waste money. Could guys confirm that 10-11 gauge 1" tubing will work?

My chart says that will be about 3mm, or around .120". That oughta be fine.

They wont go buy gauge, they go by wall thickness. .120 will be plenty.

I don't think garage space is a problem because I can work on it in the shed. I think she's concerned about hauling it places.
I guess if she's that concerned I could try and find a trailer for it. Where getting a new trailer soon so I'll have to take a look at it.Kenny_McCormic

Okay. Your mom suggested you ask around about the steel. You did. You got good answers. So- Show us your stuff, and unless your kart's 6' X 14', we'll tell you this size is suitable, and you can take THAT "professional advice" back to your mom. Cool?

Toystory I went outside and measured it and it's about 8 feet long. With everything set up Im guessing it will be about 5 ft wide. I have some pics on here somewhere that I'll post tonight.
This whole things kinda funny to me. Asking others to help me prove to my mom that it's a good project and all. For some reason it makes me laugh. Thanks for all the help though. It's kinda like when your 5 and your friend says "go ask my mom".

You didn't need to buy such thick tube. It will add a lot of weight, and not be that much stiffer than thinner wall tubing.
It's better to get larger diameter tubing, than to get thicker wall tubing.

Yep all around. I'm trying to think how long this would take me to build.? I made a bet with my tech ed teacher that I'll build some kind of kart by the end of the year so I can bring it in and show the class
. I doubt I can finish the buggy in time. I'll finish it in the summer for sure though...

i wouldn't be so sure. you'd be surprised at all the snags you'll run into in a large scale build like that. i don't know how long you work on it a day but i really doubt you'll have it done by the end of the school year.
