I'm wondering if it's worth getting new tires or just adding tubes to my existing ones. The ones I currently have won't hold air because of age and dry rot, I'm not actually sure how long I want to keep these size tires anyhow so should I just get tubes or spend a bit more for new tires (of the same size)? (For reference, they are front tires, 145/70/6)

I would go with new since that size is inexpensive. Why ride on unsafe tires when new are reasonable?

Hopefully when you take the time to breakdown the tires install tubes then put them back together, one or more tire doesn't pop split. There's no price on safety. It sounds extreme but why take the chance?

I'm not sure what kart you have, but I've replaced the inner tubes and tires on those old Carters with split rims and they are a nightmare. Water gets into the wheels then rusts the inside of them along with the tubes adhering themselves to the rust. I scrape off as much rust as I can, run the wheels on my bench grinder wire wheel, spray them down with Rust Kutter then paint the insides of them. One trick to installing tubes is slightly inflate the tube, place it inside the tire with the valve in the correct position then bolt the wheel halves together making sure you don't pinch a tube.

Karttekk is correct. Tires that size are pretty reasonable. On larger 18" to 20" rear tires on 8" rims, I have put tubes in some extremely old ( but little use, lots of tread left ) tires that have surprised me in how well they have held up.
I have a manco 706, the front tires were a piece rim so tubes would probably be ok for that. *Update* So I did decide to get some new tires, I actually found the exact same style that were on it when I got it at my local tractor supple. After fighting with getting the tires on the rim (ugh that sucked ***, makes me want to buy a tire changer), they are now on there and look pretty good. They wear HEAVILY on pavement though which really sucks, but I might also need an aliment too so. Lots of future upgrades planned however.
