yes your right, oil is very important. im not the brightest crayon in the box.If your engine is equipped with a low-oil sensor (and it probably is), then yes- it would completely prevent your engine from firing. Top up your oil and try again.
EDIT- Not to rag on you, but the ABSOLUTE first thing you do before attempting to test-fire an engine- CHECK THE OIL!
